Farmers clear Delhi borders, but roads will not open as yet. Here's why

The last batch of farmers left Delhi borders at Ghazipur, Tikri and Singhu after their year-long protest against the three contentious farm laws.

The victorious farmers called off their protest last week after the Modi government repealed the three farm laws and later agreed to farmers' other demands.

While the farmers have cleared the Delhi borders, traffic on the Singhu and Ghazipur borders will normalise only next month as the Delhi Police has to clear the concrete barriers that were erected to stop farmers from moving into the Capital.

While the Ghazipur connects Delhi and Ghaziabad, the Singhu border connects Delhi and Haryana.

Police officials said that Ghazipur and Singhu borders will open completely for commuters from January onwards. The Tikri border, however, has been opened fully for traffic.

According to officials, at least two weeks will be required to clean the borders, along with the removal of barricades and the inspection work. Police said that concrete barricades have been removed from the Singhu border.

Farmers have taken down their settlements and have vacated the borders around Delhi.

Thousands of farmers camped on Delhi borders for a year since last November to protest against the farm laws.
