Padma Shri Dr. MC Dawar, Renowned for Affordable Care, Passes Away

Jabalpur, July 4 (PTI) - Renowned Padma Shri awardee Dr. Munishwar Chandra Dawar, celebrated for offering medical treatment at a nominal fee of Rs 20, passed away on Friday at 79, according to his family.

Dr. Dawar succumbed to age-related ailments, and his last rites were conducted at 4 PM at Gupteshwar Muktidham, attended by numerous admirers, including fellow doctors and many he treated over the years.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his condolences on X, remarking, "The news of the death of Padma Shri Dr. MC Dawar is very sad. This is an irreparable loss not only for Jabalpur but for the entire state. May God grant his soul a place in his lotus feet."

The CM fondly recalled his recent interaction with Dawar, noting how deeply inspired he was by Dawar's commitment to public service.

Yadav stated, "Your demise has left a deep void in the field of human service and public welfare."

Jabalpur MP Rakesh Singh also posted on X, saying, "The news of the demise of Padmashri Dr. M.C. Dawar, the famous doctor who treated the poor for two rupees, the pride of Jabalpur, is extremely sad. His demise is an irreparable loss in the field of social service."

Born on January 16, 1946, in Punjab province, now in Pakistan, Dr. Dawar's family relocated to India during Partition. He completed his MBBS from Jabalpur Medical College in 1967.

Dr. Dawar served briefly in the Indian Army during the 1971 Indo-Pak war and returned to Jabalpur in 1972, starting a medical practice known for its low fees. Initially charging Rs 2, which gradually increased to Rs 5, Rs 10, and Rs 15, the final fee settled at Rs 20, making medical care affordable amidst rising costs.

In 2023, he was honored with the Padma Shri.
