Corruption Perception Index: India, Pakistan, China's ranks

In a corruption perception index released by a global NGO called Transparency International, India has ranked 85 out of 180 countries.

India's rank has reportedly improved by one place compared to the last report, but the corruption perception score has remained the same at 40.

The index ranks countries based on a scorecard of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean.

Neighbouring Pakistan slid significantly in the rankings. It currently stands at 140 out of 180, down from 124 a year ago. Islamabad's score is 28, compared to 31 a year ago.

Meanwhile, China ranked 66 with a score of 45. Last year, Beijing's rank was 78, with a score of 42.

The global NGO reportedly said that India's case is worrying because its score has remained stagnant, but "some of the mechanisms which help rein in corruption are weakening".

The corruption perception document reportedly said that there are "concerns over India's democratic status as fundamental freedoms, and institutional checks and balances decay". Transparency International reportedly said that there are concerns over risks to journalists and activists who have been "victims of attacks by police, political militants, criminal gangs, and corrupt local officials" in India.

In the latest corruption perception index, Denmark ranked first, followed by Finland. New Zealand rounded off the Top 3.
