Congress Criticizes PM Modi Over International Visits Amid Manipur Crisis

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) – The Congress Party, on Friday, criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his international visit to Japan and China, highlighting the fact that the people of Manipur have been waiting in vain for his attention. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, tweeted that, "The Frequently Flying (and more frequently lying) Prime Minister is off to Japan and China." His trip to China is particularly significant as India grapples with normalizing ties with China, which seems to be happening largely on Beijing’s terms.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The Frequently Flying (and more frequently lying) Prime Minister is off to Japan and China.<br><br>His visit to China is a moment of some reckoning for India. We are being forced to normalise relations with China -- largely on their terms, with China trying to take advantage of the…</p>&mdash; Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) <a href="https://twitter.com/Jairam_Ramesh/status/1961285933430706185?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 29, 2025</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Ramesh expressed concerns that China may be leveraging recent tensions between India and the United States to its benefit. He referred to China’s collaboration with Pakistan during 'Operation Sindoor', information that was disclosed by India's own military establishment, as seemingly forgotten.

Ramesh also pointed out the impact of Prime Minister Modi's statement on June 19, 2020. By claiming that, "Na koi hamari seema mein ghus aaya hai, na hi koi ghusa hua hai," it weakened India’s negotiation position, leaving the nation with limited options to manage the situation. Despite the failure to revert to the pre-April 2020 circumstances, Modi's visit appears as a result of what Ramesh described as a "notorious and cowardly clean chit."

Continuing his criticism, Ramesh underscored that, even as the Prime Minister embarks on foreign visits, the communities in Manipur affected by the events of May 2023 are still waiting for him to address their grievances. He alleged that Modi has "simply washed his hands off" the issues plaguing Manipur, blaming this attitude on the mistakes of the Union Home Minister.

Prime Minister Modi departed for his tour of Japan and China with the assertion that the visit would promote India's national interests, fostering cooperation to enhance both regional and global peace. His first stop is Japan, where he will be from August 29 to 30, and he has already arrived in Tokyo. Following his stay in Japan, Modi is set to travel to China for a two-day visit to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
