CBSE Class 10 Board Exams to Be Held Twice from 2026

Starting 2026, CBSE will offer two exam phases annually for Class 10. February's is mandatory; May's is optional for score enhancement. Aligns with NEP to reduce exam pressure and high stakes.

CBSE Class 10 Board Exams to Be Held Twice from 2026

New Delhi, June 25 (PTI) - Starting from 2026, students of Class 10 will have the opportunity to take the CBSE board exams twice within the same academic year. However, they must mandatorily appear for the first phase in February, as announced by officials on Wednesday. The second phase, set to occur in May, will provide an optional chance for students who wish to enhance their results.

This significant development comes after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) sanctioned the norms for conducting Class 10 board exams twice annually. This decision aligns with the recommendations outlined in the new National Education Policy (NEP).

“The initial phase will be held in February, while the second will take place in May, with results released in April and June, respectively,” shared Sanyam Bhardwaj, CBSE Examination Controller. He further explained the mandatory nature of the February exam but highlighted that the May phase would remain optional. Students will have the opportunity to improve their marks in any three subjects from categories like science, mathematics, social science, and languages.

The guidelines also offer flexibility for students from winter-bound schools, who can opt to appear in either of the phases. For the academic session, internal assessments will occur only once.

In February, CBSE unveiled draft norms, inviting feedback from public stakeholders. The new NEP emphasizes reducing the "high-stakes" nature of board exams, permitting students to take exams on up to two occasions annually.
