Bikram Singh Majithia's Remand Extended in Disproportionate Assets Case

Bikram Singh Majithia's Remand Extended in Disproportionate Assets Case

Chandigarh, Jul 2 (PTI): On Wednesday, a court in Mohali extended by four days the vigilance custody remand of Bikram Singh Majithia, a prominent Shiromani Akali Dal leader, who is facing charges in a disproportionate assets (DA) case.

Majithia was brought before the court under heavy security after the conclusion of his initial seven-day vigilance remand on Wednesday.

Following a three-hour hearing, public prosecutor Ferry Sofat informed the media that the court had agreed to the Vigilance Bureau's (VB) request to extend Majithia's remand by an additional four days.

Security was intensified at the VB office as well as at the Mohali district court complex where the politician made his appearance.

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau had apprehended Majithia on June 25 in connection with the DA case, which allegedly involves the laundering of Rs 540 crore in "drug money."

After his arrest, the court had initially placed him in seven days of vigilance custody starting June 26.

The latest FIR filed against Majithia claims that preliminary investigations have uncovered the laundering of over Rs 540 crore of "drug money" through various channels, purportedly aided by Majithia.

This latest FIR arises from ongoing investigations by a special investigation team of the Punjab Police probing a 2021 drug case.

Back in 2021, Majithia faced charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act based on a 2018 report from the anti-drug Special Task Force.

Majithia spent over five months in Patiala jail, gaining his freedom in August 2022 when bail was granted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
