The action came weeks after the broadcaster aired a two-part documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots and India.

Amid reports of searches by the Income Tax department at various offices of UK broadcaster BBC, Opposition parties were quick to attack the Narendra Modi government.

Congress took to Twitter and called the I-T action part of an undeclared emergency under the Modi administration. Congress linked the raids to the recent BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra posted a sarcastic tweet, calling the crackdown "unexpected". She also linked the BBC case to the Adani controversy, saying that instead of a probe, he would receive a warm welcome at Sebi.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said that the "cause and effects" of the raids is "quite obvious".
