Andhra Pradesh Launches AI-Driven Mosquito Control Initiative

Andhra Pradesh will use AI for mosquito control, replacing manual operations with automated surveillance systems. Six cities will implement AI sensors, IoT, and drones to optimize response and resource use. Hospitals will report to identify and fog disease hotspots.

Andhra Pradesh Launches AI-Driven Mosquito Control Initiative

Amaravati, July 7 (PTI) - Andhra Pradesh is gearing up to launch an innovative pilot mosquito control initiative using Artificial Intelligence (AI) named the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS). This program aims to monitor mosquito density, identify species, and facilitate timely insecticide application.

A TDP press release on Monday revealed that the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department plans to deploy AI-powered sensors and drones. These will track mosquito species, gender, and density while generating automatic alerts for targeted spraying. The initiative, which replaces the existing "ineffective" manual operations, will be implemented at 66 sites across six municipal corporations: Visakhapatnam (16), Vijayawada (28), Kakinada (4), Rajamahendravaram (5), Nellore (7), and Kurnool (6).

The Internet of Things (IoT) sensors are set to enable real-time monitoring of mosquito density and weather conditions such as humidity and temperature, thus eliminating the need for "blind spraying." This advanced approach is expected to optimize spraying processes.

Drones used for spraying will cut down on time, reduce chemical usage, and lower costs. A central dashboard will offer live data to monitor field activities and ensure speedy responses during outbreaks.

Principal secretary of MAUD, S Suresh Kumar, and director P Sampath Kumar noted that specialized agencies will carry out the project, with compensation linked to their performance. Complaints will be monitored through the Vector Control and Puramitra apps.

Additionally, hospitals will contribute daily reports on dengue, malaria, and chikungunya cases, helping to identify hotspots. Based on these reports, fogging and larvicidal measures will be intensified.
