AIADMK Condemns Police Brutality in Temple Guard's Death

Chennai, July 4 (PTI): The AIADMK expressed deep concerns on Friday regarding revelations from the autopsy report of Ajith Kumar, a temple guard in Sivaganga district, who allegedly died due to police brutality.

The main opposition party highlighted numerous injuries detailed in the post-mortem analysis conducted by a state-run hospital, condemning the actions of those responsible as inhumane.

The AIADMK questioned the motives behind the involvement of a special police team in a trivial case concerning jewelry theft in Sivaganga district. They speculated on whether there was an undisclosed, significant reason for the violent interrogation that extended beyond the theft allegations.

In a statement posted online, the AIADMK IT Wing reported the presence of "50 external injuries, cigarette burns, head trauma, and cerebral bleeding." Additionally, they noted that a log was thrust against Kumar's stomach, causing severe contusions. The injuries were described as appallingly brutal.

The party pointed to "ambiguities and doubts," emphasizing the complainant's background. The complainant, a woman, had claimed that her gold jewelry was stolen from her car.

In connection with her complaint, Kumar, a temporary temple guard, was allegedly tortured and beaten to death by police while being questioned on June 28.

The Madras High Court's Madurai Bench remarked that even a murderer might not inflict such injuries. Kumar's purported autopsy report has been widely shared on social media.

Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, on July 1, announced this case would be transferred to the CBI, pledging complete cooperation with the central agency.

Stalin expressed his anguish over Kumar's death, asserting that it occurred due to police assault during interrogation, calling the act "unjustifiable and inexcusable."

On July 2, K. R. Periyakaruppan, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Co-operation, delivered a house site patta, an employment appointment letter, and a Rs 5 lakh solatium to Kumar’s family, ensuring assistance as per Stalin's commitment made via a phone call on July 1.

Kumar hailed from Madappuram village in the Tiruppuvanam taluk of Sivaganga district.
