Delhi: 14 arrested in Hanuman Jayanti violence that rocked Jahangirpuri and left 9 injured

Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with the violence during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri, police said on Sunday. Nine, including one civilian and eight police personnel, were injured in the incident.

The police said there was stone-pelting and some vehicles were also torched during the clashes between two communities Saturday evening. A senior official said a police sub-inspector sustained a bullet injury.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Usha Rangnani said an FIR has been registered under relevant sections.

UP’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said senior officials in the field have been asked to keep a close watch on sensitive areas of their respective districts.

Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal said that the incident is extremely condemnable and appealed to all to maintain peace.

The BJP issued a statement late night in a rejoinder to a joint statement from opposition parties over the recent incidents of hate speech and communal violence in the country.
