<p>Aamir Khan said at IFFI 2025 that he never followed traditional rules of stardom and picked films purely based on personal excitement, even when they seemed impractical or risky.</p>

<p>I don't know how I became a star, says actor Aamir Khan, stressing that in his career of over 30 years, he did everything that broke the many "rules" of stardom.</p>
<p>Speaking at a session during the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the 60-year-old actor said his filmography comprises of films that were "impractical".</p>
<p>"I don't know how I became a star. By all logic, I should not have been a star. I broke all the rules and I made everything impractical. So, I feel grateful that I received so much respect and success. Otherwise, practically speaking, none of the steps I took were from the point of view of achieving success," Aamir said.</p>
<p>Whether it was "Sarfarosh", "Lagaan", "Ghajini", "Taare Zameen Par", or his latest "Sitaare Zameen Par", the actor said all of them were experimental and shouldn't have worked at the box office.</p>
<p>"In fact, almost every film I used to pick, I used to be like, 'I don't know whether this is going to work.' Like 'Sarfarosh' and 'Lagaan', when we were releasing the film, we had no idea if people are going to like it or not."</p>
<p>"Then 'Lagaan', there was even 'Dil Chahta Hai' which was very unusual for its time and now 'Sitaare Zameen Par', all these films that I have picked, they were not meant to be successful," he added.</p>
<p>During the session, titled "The Narrative Architect of Social Transformation", Aamir said he likes to "surprise my audience and myself" as an actor.</p>
<p>"I don't want to do the same thing again and again. It's just out of how I am as a personality that I have picked different scripts. And I have always gone with what excites me, personally."</p>
<p>Aamir said these days a lot of film people tend to try and second guess the audience.</p>
<p>"They are like, 'What is it that I should make today?' The obvious answer is what people are watching and what are the films running nowadays in the market. So, you try and make that genre."</p>
<p>"If it's action, you make action. If it's comedy, you try and pick up a comedy film. But I have never thought that way. I have not been able to think that way. I pick films based on my own personal excitement towards the story. And most often, that goes against what is the norm at that time."</p>
<p>Aamir said when he did "Ghajini" in 2008, action films were not being made in the industry.</p>
<p>"Everyone told me that, 'Man, you are doing action now. Action films are not running nowadays.' So, 'Ghajini' came in and with it, action came in to fashion," he said.</p>
<p>Aamir's last release was "Sitaare Zameen Par", which released in theatres in June, followed by its digital release on YouTube under pay per view model.</p>
<p>Directed by R S Prasanna, the movie featured Aamir as Gulshan, an assistant coach of a major basketball team. After being fired from his job, he is ordered to either go to jail or do 90 days of community service as the coach of a team of specially-abled basketball players.</p>
<p>Aamir said he was surprised by the success of the film, which earned over Rs 250 crore at the box office.</p>
<p>"The audience has proved everyone wrong in the way the film got a reaction. The kind of love and respect the film got was unprecedented. So, I am really happy that audiences don't only want to watch one kind of film."</p>
<p>"At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what genre you are making it, what genre you are working in, but every film that you make has to be really hitting on the right notes. So, even if you are making an action film, at the end of the day, you need a good story for that."</p>
<p>Aamir's films have often been praised for providing entertainment with a dose of message, whether it was "Sitaare Zameen Par", which spoke about neurodivergent children or his earlier films like "Taare Zameen Par", "Dangal" and "3 Idiots".</p>
<p>The actor, however, stressed that he is not someone who picks up social causes actively.</p>
<p>"I am not an activist and nor am I someone who is interested in actively taking up issues. That's not me. What is me is storytelling, what is me is films. That's my world. And I am very sharply aware that when a person comes to a cinema hall, he or she is not coming there for a lesson in sociology. For that, they would go to a college," he said.</p>
<p>His first and primary responsibility is to entertain audiences and Aamir said he is aware of that.</p>
<p>"But the word entertain is not just make you laugh. I can make you cry also and entertain you. Basically, I want to engage you in one way or the other. I can scare you by making a horror film. I can make a suspense thriller. I can make a family drama. I can make different genres."</p>
<p>The actor said he is now looking for his next film.</p>
<p>"I am deciding which one to do. So, I am not thinking and have never thought that which is the next social topic I should pick up. That does not occur to me at all. So, the first attraction for me is the great script. And if that great script is also telling us something which is socially relevant, it's all the better. But I am not trying to look for social themes," Aamir said.</p>

<p>Dharmendra remained unsoiled throughout his glorious career in a fraternity that witnessed changes every decade, megastar Amitabh Bachchan said on Tuesday as he mourned the death of his friend and co-star of classics such as "Sholay" and "Chupke Chupke".</p>
<p>Dharmendra, 89, passed away at his Juhu home on Monday after prolonged illness.</p>
<p>"...another valiant Giant has left us .. left the arena .. leaving behind a silence with an unbearable sound," Bachchan wrote about Dharmendra, who played Veeru to his Jai in the 1975 classic and defined onscreen brotherhood through the song "Ye dosti hum nahi todenge".</p>

<p>Bachchan attended the last rites of the actor with grandson Agastya Nanda and son Abhishek Bachchan.</p>
<p>Nanda plays Dharmendra's son in the yet to release "Ikkis", which is possibly the late actor's last movie role.</p>

<p>Bachchan said Dharmendra's "smile, his charm and his warmth" extended to all that came in his vicinity, which, according to the megastar, is a rarity in the profession.</p>
<p>"The air about us swings vacant .. a vacuum that shall ever remain vacuus.. prayers," Bachchan wrote.</p>

<p>Dharmendra, one of India&rsquo;s most enduring stars who sparkled bright right through a remarkable 65-year career spanning 300 films ranging from &ldquo;Satyakam&rdquo; to &ldquo;Sholay&rdquo; died here on Monday days ahead of his 90th birthday.</p>
<p>The much loved actor, who lived most of his life in the blazing arclights of publicity, was cremated at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai&rsquo;s Ville Parle suburb quietly and with little fuss.</p>
<p>Till the end &ndash; and even after that &ndash; his family made no comment on his death.</p>
<p>Dharmendra, who would have turned 90 on December 8, had not been keeping well for a while and was in and out of hospital.</p>
<p>Finally, on November 12, a day after several media houses reported his death and his furious family requested privacy, he was discharged and taken to his Juhu home where he breathed his last.</p>
<p>With the family maintaining silence, the camera crews and others posted outside his residence picked up cues from an ambulance and several cars seen driving out of the gates.</p>
<p>A little later, his wife Hema Malini and daughter Esha Deol, as well as industry colleagues Amitabh Bachchan and son Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and his father Salim Khan, were spotted at the crematorium.</p>
<p>Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Jackie Shroff and Shabana Azmi also attended the last rites.</p>
<p>President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes for the veteran actor, who more than anybody else perhaps embodied goodness and wholesomeness through his many films in which he played the romantic hero, the brawny man who beat up the baddies and the comic actor with equal finesse.</p>
<p>"The demise of veteran actor and former member of parliament Shri Dharmendra Ji is a great loss to Indian cinema. One of the most popular actors, he delivered numerous memorable performances during his decades-long illustrious career,&rdquo; the president said.</p>
<p>"As a towering figure of Indian cinema, he leaves behind a legacy which will continue to inspire young generations of artists. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers," she said.</p>
<p>PM Modi said Dharmendra's death marks "the end of an era in Indian cinema".</p>
<p>"He was an iconic film personality, a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played. The manner in which he played diverse roles struck a chord with countless people.</p>
<p>"Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility and warmth. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans. Om Shanti," PM Modi posted on X.</p>
<p>Condolences also poured in from across the film industry, with celebrities such as Saira Banu, Sharmila Tagore, Karan Johar, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor mourning the death of the actor fondly known as &ldquo;Garam Dharam&rdquo; and India&rsquo;s first "He Man&rdquo;.</p>
<p>"He was just different. He never forgot his roots and he would talk about it openly. He was, as they say, a man of the earth and he remained very close to his real self... I didn't see any change in him with stardom and popularity," Tagore, who worked with Dharmendra in classics such as "Satyakam" and "Chupke Chupke", told PTI.</p>
<p>Banu, who also worked with Dharmendra on several movies including "Aayee Milan Ki Bela", "Jwaar Bhaata" and "Resham Ki Dori", said she spoke to the actor earlier this month and he told her not to worry and he will come and visit her soon.</p>
<p>"It's the saddest day because he is family. I'm shocked. I thought we will celebrate his birthday," Banu told PTI.</p>
<p>"Dilip sahab considered him like a younger brother. They shared a relationship that went beyond work. We've been there for each other in good and bad times. He was one of those rare people who visited Dilip sahab quite often, whether he was in hospital or at home. Sometimes he would come at odd hours as well," she added.</p>
<p>Johar said Dharmendra was loved by everyone in the industry.</p>
<p>"It is an end of an ERA&hellip;.. a massive mega star&hellip; the embodiment of a HERO in mainstream cinema&hellip; incredibly handsome and the most enigmatic screen presence &hellip; he is and will always be a bonafide Legend of Indian Cinema&hellip; defining and richly present in the pages of cinema history &hellip; but mostly he was the best human being&hellip; ," Johar, who directed Dharmendra in 2023's hit "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, wrote on Instagram.</p>
<p>Akshay shared a photo of the late cinema star, saying Dharmendra will continue to live on through his movies.</p>
<p>"Growing up, Dharmendra ji was the hero every boy wanted to be... our industry's original He-Man, thank you for inspiring generations. You'll live through your movies and the love you spread. Om shanti," he wrote on X.</p>
<p>Dharmendra, born Dharam Singh Deol in Punjab in 1935, enjoyed a remarkable six-decade career, featuring in over 300 films and headlining classics such as &ldquo;Sholay&rdquo;, &ldquo;Chupke Chupke&rdquo;, &ldquo;Satyakam, &ldquo;Anupama&rdquo;, &ldquo;Seeta Aur Geeta&rdquo; and many others.</p>
<p>Dharmendra is survived by his wife Prakash Kaur, Hema Malini, sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, and daughters Vijeta, Ajeeta, Esha and Ahana.</p>
<p>He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012.</p>
<p>The actor also played brief innings in politics by winning the Bikaner Lok Sabha seat in 2004 but after just one term, he chose to retire.</p>
<p>Dharmendra remained active till the very end and fans would get to see his performance one last time in Sriram Raghavan-directed "Ikkis".</p>

<p>Miss Mexico was crowned Miss Universe in Thailand on Friday, strutting to victory after staging a walkout when an organiser of the beauty pageant chastised her among several dramatic missteps before the final round.</p>
<p>Contestants from Ivory Coast, the Philippines, Thailand and Venezuela also made it to the final round, selected from more than 120 women vying for the title in a contest considered one of the "big four" of global beauty pageants.</p>
<p>However, chaos reigned before Miss Mexico Fatima Bosch was crowned, from allegations of an insult to her intelligence to judges quitting and participants falling on and off the stage.</p>
<p>Bosch staged a dramatic walkout this month from a meeting where she was lambasted by Miss Universe Thailand director Nawat Itsaragrisil.</p>
<p>Nawat appeared in a livestream of the event to single her out during a dispute over her apparent failure to post promotional content on her social media accounts.</p>
<p>Bosch, flanked by Miss Iraq, walked out of the room after Nawat called for security to intervene.</p>
<p>Others appeared to rise in solidarity with Bosch, before freezing as Nawat warned that those still wanting to participate should "sit down".</p>
<p>"What your director did is not respectful: he called me dumb," Bosch told reporters at the time. "The world needs to see this because we are empowered women and this is a platform for our voice."</p>
<p>Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called Bosch an "example of how we women should speak out" in the face of aggression after the incident.</p>
<p>"In public events, I say women look prettier when we speak out," Sheinbaum said. "So my recognition goes to this young woman."</p>
<p>Nawat later apologised.</p>
<p>He initially declined to comment when asked about Bosch on Friday, telling reporters he'd "rather not talk about her".</p>
<p>"It's better to let pageant fans discuss it. I respect the result anyway," he said in Thai.</p>
<p>Nawat then congratulated her later in the same news conference.</p>
<p>"I do support, and congratulations again to Mexico's fans," he said.</p>

<p>Mexican media and social networks were awash with coverage of Bosch after the incident, heightening anticipation.</p>

<p>"Mexico, Mexico!" chanted the crowd, which erupted in cheers and applause when she was crowned, while fireworks lit up the sky, according to Mexican media reports.</p>
<p>Other drama in the run-up to the final round included two judges quitting this week, one alleging that the contest was rigged by a "secret and illegitimate vote" held without the official jury.</p>
<p>"This vote was conducted by individuals who are not recognised members of the official judging panel," French composer Omar Harfouch wrote in a statement posted on Instagram.</p>
<p>The Miss Universe Organization has denied Harfouch's claim, saying that "no impromptu jury has been created".</p>
<p>Former professional footballer Claude Makelele also withdrew as a judge, citing "unforeseen personal reasons" in a statement on social media.</p>
<p>Miss Britain Danielle Latimer tripped and fell flat on the stage during the costume round on Wednesday while wearing an outfit inspired by the Cockney character Eliza Doolittle.</p>
<p>And Miss Jamaica Gabrielle Henry was hospitalised after she fell off the main stage during an evening gown showcase, president of the Miss Universe Organization Raul Rocha said in a statement.</p>
<p>Miss Universe Jamaica public relations director Shannon-Dale Reid told AFP late on Wednesday that Henry was "resting under medical observation" and had not suffered serious injuries.</p>

<p>Salvador Plasencia, the doctor who supplied ketamine to &ldquo;Friends&rdquo; star Matthew Perry before his fatal overdose in 2023, was sentenced to 30 months in California.</p>

<p>A doctor who supplied "Friends" star Matthew Perry with ketamine in the months before he fatally overdosed, musing to a fellow physician over "how much this moron will pay" for the drug, was jailed in California on Wednesday.</p>
<p>Salvador Plasencia, 44, is the first of five people to face justice over Perry's 2023 death in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home.</p>
<p>Plasencia was ordered to serve 30 months in prison for supplying the drug to the actor -- who had well documented struggles with addiction -- at grossly inflated prices.</p>
<p>In a victim impact statement filed with the court, Perry's mother Suzanne Perry and his stepfather, Keith Morrison, said Plasencia -- who did not supply the fatal dose of the drug -- had neglected his duty as a doctor.</p>
<p>"Matthew's recovery counted on you saying NO," they wrote.</p>
<p>"Your motives? I can't imagine. A doctor whose life is devoted to helping people?"</p>
<p>Plasencia's attorneys, Karen Goldstein and Debra White, who had argued for a probationary sentence, said their client, who has surrendered his medical license, was filled with regret.</p>
<p>"He is not a villain. He is someone who made serious mistakes in his treatment decisions involving the off-label use of ketamine -- a drug commonly used for depression that does not have uniform standards," they said after the sentencing.</p>
<p>"The mistakes he made over the 13 days during which he treated Mr. Perry will stay with him forever."</p>
<p>Another doctor, Mark Chavez, pleaded guilty in October to conspiring to distribute ketamine to Perry.</p>
<p>Plasencia allegedly bought ketamine off Chavez and sold it to the American-Canadian actor at hugely inflated prices.</p>
<p>"I wonder how much this moron will pay," Plasencia wrote in one text message presented by prosecutors.</p>
<p>The four other people who have also admitted their part in supplying drugs to the actor will be sentenced over the coming months.</p>
<p>They include Jasveen Sangha, the alleged "Ketamine Queen" who supplied drugs to high-end clients and celebrities, who could be jailed for up to 65 years.</p>
<p>Perry's live-in personal assistant and another man pleaded guilty in August to charges of conspiracy to distribute ketamine.</p>
<p><br><strong>- Addiction struggles -</strong></p>
<p>The actor's lengthy struggles with substance addiction were well-documented, but his death at age 54 sent shockwaves through the global legions of "Friends" fans.</p>
<p>A criminal investigation was launched soon after an autopsy discovered he had high levels of ketamine -- an anesthetic -- in his system.</p>
<p>In a plea deal with prosecutors, Plasencia said he went to Perry's home to administer ketamine by injection and distributed 20 vials of the drug over a roughly two-week period in autumn 2023.</p>
<p>Perry had been taking ketamine as part of supervised therapy for depression.</p>
<p>But prosecutors say that before his death he became addicted to the substance, which also has psychedelic properties and is a popular party drug.</p>
<p>First airing between 1994 and 2004, the televised comedy "Friends" followed the lives of six New Yorkers navigating adulthood, dating and careers, drew a massive following and made megastars of previously unknown actors.</p>
<p>Perry's role as the sarcastic man-child Chandler brought him fabulous wealth, but hid a dark struggle with addiction to painkillers and alcohol.</p>
<p>In 2018, he suffered a drug-related burst colon and underwent multiple surgeries.</p>
<p>In his 2022 memoir "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," Perry described going through detox dozens of times.</p>
<p>"I have mostly been sober since 2001," he wrote, "save for about sixty or seventy little mishaps."</p>

<p>IMDb on Wednesday announced its list of the most popular Indian stars and directors of 2025, with "Saiyaara" actors Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda topping the annual ranking based on page views from more than 250 million monthly visitors to the platform.</p>
<p>Panday secured the No 1 position among actors, followed by co-star Aneet Padda, while filmmaker Mohit Suri, who directed "Saiyaara", led the inaugural Most Popular Indian Directors list, the company said in a press release.</p>
<p>Panday said he is deeply humbled by the recognition for his first film as an actor. "(It) is nothing short of a dream come true and a full circle Paulo Coelho moment. But truly, if anything, this recognition makes me a little more aware of the responsibility I have towards my craft, and at the same time, it excites me for what&rsquo;s to come," the actor said in a statement.</p>
<p>He credited Suri for his guidance and thanked producers Aditya Chopra and Akshaye Widhani, as well as casting director Shanoo Sharma, for their support. "I look forward to returning soon with my second film, and this honour is motivation enough to try and deliver a performance that will resonate deeply.
