Oscars 2024: Robert Downey Jr wins Best Supporting Actor; his 1st ever Academy Award

Robert Downey Jr. secured the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in ‘Oppenheimer’ at the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

This marks Downey's first-ever Oscar win, following previous nominations for Best Actor in 1993 for ‘Chaplin’ and for Best Supporting Actor in 2009 for ‘Tropic Thunder.’

Considered a frontrunner for the award, Downey Jr. had already clinched several major Best Supporting Actor honours for the same role, including the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild awards.

Downey Jr. expressed gratitude by acknowledging his ‘terrible childhood’ and then the Academy, humorously remarking on the order. He also thanked his ‘veterinarian... sorry... wife, Susan Downey,’ highlighting her role in rescuing and nurturing him back to life. He credited her for his presence on the stage. Additionally, he shared his ‘little secret,’ admitting that he needed the job more than it needed him, and emphasized that it has transformed him into a better individual.
