Jurassic World Dominion Movie Review: Dinosaurs are extinct, just like the film’s story plot

When successful film franchises announce ‘perhaps, this is the last you will see of us’, it ushers in the nostalgia of growing up with the film and its characters. Jurassic World Dominion is one such film that made worldwide audience book tickets to catch the last glimpse of the film. Alas, this isn’t a film that pays its dues.

There are dinosaurs; there is an environmental catastrophe triggered by a money-greedy, chaos-loving private enterprise that camouflages an earth-loving and purpose-driven organization. Sounds similar? Dinosaurs have moved from Isla Nublar Island and reproduced worldwide, and people are trying to adapt to their presence. Till here, the writers are on the right track. But hereon, it feels as if the makers sat down over a coffee and forced the writer to make it bigger. One can imagine the writer thinking: not just more teeth; we need to make this bigger, awkward and confusing.

So they introduced foot-sized (genetically-engineered) locusts sent out with the intention of triggering a worldwide food famine. A dino-variant of scissor hands fighting with T-Rex and Giganotosaurus to be the apex predator! And, of course, the makers have brought some of the old characters back on the screen. A macho Owen (Chris Pratt) tames a Hippodraco with ease while riding on a horse. Yes, there is Blue; and Blue has a baby too.

Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum reunite and that’s the only solace for the audience. One key reason why this film doesn’t connect with the audience is that it’s stretched beyond believability. Similarly, the Jurassic series has always been made keeping in both spectrum of the audience – children and adults. This one, though, feels like it caters to only children.

Therefore, if you are a superfan of the franchise or want your kids to enjoy a dinosaur-based film, go for it. Otherwise, save the money till it hits an OTT platform.
