Warner Bros. reveal 'Matrix' 5 on the cards, to be directed by Drew Goddard

'The Matrix' franchise is expanding. Warner Bros. on Wednesday announced a new part in the movie series, revealing that Drew Goddard, acclaimed for his work on 'The Martian', will both write and direct the upcoming instalment. With the new director on board, this will be the first film in the franchise to not include the series' creators, Lana and Lilly Wachowski. However, it remains unclear if the original franchise stars, Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss, will return to reprise their roles.

Jesse Ehrman, the president of production at Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, said in a statement, “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honouring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”

“The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making his new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio,” Ehrman added, per the Hollywood Reporter. While the original creators will not be part of the film's direction, Lana will be one of the executive producers.

Will Keanu Reeves return for 'Matrix' 5?

While there’s anticipation about the potential return of franchise stars like Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss, with the new director taking on the project, the makers may proceed with a fresh cast. For the uninitiated, Reeves first debuted in the 1999 film 'The Matrix' as Neo, while Carrie Anne-Moss featured as Trinity. The actors have since been featured in every 'Matrix' movie.
