Could the royal family reconcile? Prince Harry's ‘Spare’ update might be an olive branch to King Charles

Prince Harry's memoir, Spare, which explores his life as the second son of King Charles III and Princess Diana, will soon be available in paperback. The new edition, set for release in the U.S. on October 22 and in the U.K. on October 24, will feature the same cover image as the hardcover version, but with a redesigned package. Penguin Random House confirmed that the content of the paperback will be unchanged from the original release.

The decision to keep the memoir unchanged might signal Prince Harry's desire to move towards reconciliation with his estranged family.

This interest in healing old wounds was evident even before the memoir's release.

Harry had previously stated, ‘I don't want to tell anyone what to think of it and that includes my family.’

He described the book as a raw account of his life and a continuation of his mental health journey.

In the memoir, Harry details significant moments, including his and Prince William’s plea for their father not to marry Camilla Parker Bowles, as well as the skepticism from his family and the British press towards Meghan Markle from the start. The book also reveals a heated confrontation between Harry and William, which allegedly escalated to physical violence.

The memoir was initially much longer, with an original draft of 800 pages trimmed down to 400. Despite the book's focus on personal grievances, Harry clarified that his goal is not to undermine the monarchy but to address and resolve internal issues.

Since stepping back from royal duties in January 2020 and relocating to Southern California, Harry and Meghan have maintained a distance from royal responsibilities. The memoir’s original release on January 10, 2023, marked it as an immediate bestseller, selling over 6 million copies worldwide and setting a Guinness World Record for the fastest-selling nonfiction book.
