Britney Spears’ father files to end conservatorship that controls his daughter’s life

In a stunning move, Britney Spears’ father has filed a petition to terminate the controversial conservatorship that has controlled the singer’s life for 13 years.

The filing comes weeks after Jamie Spears said he was prepared to step back from his role as conservator, and after repeated requests from the pop star to remove him from what she and her supporters say is a 'cruel and exploitative arrangement'.

The 'Baby One More Time' singer's father said 'recent events' called into question whether she still needed a court to oversee her personal affairs and finances.

The filing adds that Jamie Spears wants 'what is best for his daughter' and that she 'believes she can handle her own life'.

The conservatorship, which was established in 2008, had Jamie Spears overseeing his popstar daughter's personal affairs and money.

Britney Spears had earlier launched a bid to remove him from the controversial guardianship role that she has called 'abuse'.

In an emotional testimony to the court, the 'Toxic' singer in June said she had been required to use an intrauterine device for birth control, take medications against her will and prevented from getting married, having another child under the conservatorship.
