Apara Mehta Returns to 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2'

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI): Apara Mehta has made a poignant return to the much-loved series "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2" this July, reprising her role as a guardian spirit to Smriti Irani's Tulsi Virani. Mehta shared that their mutual tears were more than just an on-screen reunion; it marked the rekindling of a cherished friendship.

The first season, which aired from 2000 to 2008, saw Mehta portray the strict mother-in-law Savita, who eventually accepted Tulsi's wisdom before her character's dramatic euthanasia storyline. The image of Savita remains on the Virani family wall, ever-present in Tulsi's memories, who has now taken the mantle as the family's matriarch.

Reflecting on her surprise return, Mehta recalled her readiness to join without hesitation, stating, "We didn't even need words; our eyes said it all, filled with emotions, and it was beautifully done," she told PTI.

Mehta, 64, who became a household name post "Kyunki", has enjoyed a notable career with roles in "Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka", "Saat Phere", "Jamai Raja", as well as films like "Devdas" and "Tees Maar Khan". However, she credits "Kyunki" as the turning point of her career. "I've done nice work since, but I'm still known for 'Kyunki'. It's why I don't need auditions," she remarked.

The bond between Mehta and Irani transcends their on-screen roles, evolving from an in-law dynamic to genuine friendship during the show's run. Mehta praised Irani's acumen both as an actress and now as a successful politician.

Ekta Kapoor's contribution to Indian television through "Kyunki", with its glamorous cinematography and engaging multi-generational storytelling, earned her accolades from Mehta for transforming the landscape of Indian series.

Despite the passage of time, the "Kyunki" family remains connected through a personal WhatsApp group, celebrating its premiere anniversary. Mehta reflected on the deep friendships formed, emphasizing that the show's legacy isn't just about its unprecedented success but the lasting bonds it created.

As the second season unfolds, Mehta is optimistic due to the enduring camaraderie among the cast. "With talents like Ekta and Shobha Kapoor leading, I believe it will have another successful run," she expressed. She also fondly remembered Sudha Shivpuri, the beloved Baa, who passed away in 2015.
