UP Election 2022: BJP launches big outreach to woo Brahmins 'upset' with Yogi

The BJP is worried about the Brahmin vote in the poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.

Amid the "Brahmins are angry with the Yogi Adityanath government" narrative, the BJP has launched a big Brahmin outreach.

The BJP has formed a four member committee to decide on outreach programmes to the Brahmin community in Uttar Pradesh covering all 403 constituencies. Members of the committee include former Union ministers Shiv Pratap Shukla and Mahesh Sharma, BJP leader Abhijat Mishra and former national secretary Ram Bhai Mokariya.

Party's UP incharge Dharmendra Pradhan met with state leaders from the community on Sunday evening in Delhi.

Interestingly, the party is keen on roping in Union Minister Ajay Mishra, whose son is an accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, as well for the party’s campaign among the upper castes, reports quoting sources said.

Brahmins comprise about 17% of the vote in Uttar Pradesh and are a significant community in terms of having influence far beyond their own actual numbers. BJP cannot afford to ignore the influential community, especially when several Brahmin leaders in eastern Uttar Pradesh have recently switched to the Samajwadi Party. The most significant is the heavywieght Tiwari clan of Gorakhpur who have now moved to the SP from the BSP.
