UP Election 2022: Amid hijab row, PM says Muslim women's 'praise for Modi' caused rivals 'stomach ache'

Amid the hijab row in Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday patted his back for working for the welfare of Muslim women.

Addressing an election rally in UP's Saharanpur, PM Modi reached out to Muslim voters, highlighting his government's steps like the ban on "triple talaq".

He tainted his rivals by saying that those who treated Muslims as votebank had a stomach ache as Muslim women were praising him.

"We freed Muslim sisters from the tyranny of triple talaq. When Muslim sisters started supporting the BJP openly, these vote-mongers became uneasy. They are trying to stop Muslim daughters from progress. Our government stands with Muslim women," PM Modi said.

Taking a swipe at rivals, he said Muslim women's praise for him caused them "stomach ache".

PM's remarks came amid a simmering controversy over hijab in BJP ruled Karnataka where Muslim women are being denied entry in some colleges for wearing headscarves or hijab.
