PM Modi's meeting with Sikhs, Hindus from Afghanistan, day before Punjab elections

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a delegation of Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan on February 19.

The meeting occurred a day before Punjab votes to elect its next government. The delegation called on the PM at his official residence in Delhi.

They thanked Modi for bringing in the Citizenship Amendment Act which promised Indian citizenship to minority communities from some of India's neighbours, including Afghanistan, if they came to the country before a cut-off date.

The delegation gifted PM Modi with a traditional Afghan turban, which Modi said would make former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai very happy.

The Indian government had also evacuated many Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan after the Taliban took over the country.

The delegation also thanked the PM for bringing the 'swaroop' of Guru Granth Sahib from Afghanistan last year.

A day earlier, PM Modi had met eminent personalities from the Sikh community, though the BJP maintained that the meeting should not be connected to the elections.
