A Congress government in a state, actually being run by the BJP - this was Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's allegation at a rally in Punjab. She accused former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh of having a secret tie-up with the BJP, which has now turned into a formal alliance for the elections.

The Congress leader told voters, "In the current scenario, it's important for you to realise the true nature of politicians and political parties. You can't take the right decision without realise their true nature. It's true that there was a Congress government in Punjab for the last 5 years. It's also true that the government had some faults. It got waylaid. That government was not being run from Punjab. That government was being run from Delhi. By Delhi, I don't mean Congress party, but the BJP government at the Centre. That secret alliance is now in the open."

She was campaigning in Kotkapura, with just a week left before the northern state votes to elect its next government.

Amarinder Singh resigned as Chief Minister in September 2021, after a prolonged tussle with other Congress leaders, including Navjot Singh Sidhu. Amarinder Singh then quit the party and floated the Punjab Lok Congress, which has allied with the BJP for the elections.

Out of 117 constituencies, the BJP is contesting on 65, while Amarinder's PLC has 37, and the other member of the alliance, Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) has 15 seats.

Punjab votes on February 20, with results being announced on March 10.
