Plea against EVMs: SC may hear PIL as state polls loom closer

With elections in 5 states just around the corner, the Supreme Court said that it would consider hearing a petition against the use of EVMs, or electronic voting machines, reports said.

Lawyer ML Sharma challenged a provision of the Representation of People Act which led to the introduction of EVMs in India's election machinery, as per reports. The petitioner reportedly claimed that Section 61A of the RPA was not passed by Parliament, and hence, usage of EVMs cannot be imposed. He further sought the usage of ballot papers in the upcoming state Assembly elections.
