BJP's former ally the Naga People's Front is predicted to win 6 seats and Congress 1, according to an aggregate of exit polls done by various news organisations.&nbsp;
&nbsp;In formerly insurgency-hit Nagaland, the NDPP is slated to get 28-34 seats with a vote share of 33 per cent, according to India Today-My Axis.
The poll also gives BJP a surprising 16 per cent vote share and 10-14 seats, possibly coming from eastern Nagaland where it focused its campaigning. Congress is predicted to get 10 per cent votes and between 1-2 seats and the rump of the Naga People's Front which remained after some 21 MLAs joined NDPP is forecast to get 13 per cent vote share and between 3-8 seats.
Times Now similarly predicts 27-33 seats for NDPP, 12-16 seats for BJP, and 4-8 seats for NPF. While Zee News-Matrize is giving 35-43 to NDPP-BJP, it has also predicted 2-5 seats for the NPF and 1-3 seats for the Congress.&nbsp;

Amid voting for Assembly elections in Nagaland, violence was reported from Tyui constituency in Wokha district on 27 February 2023.
Janata Dal (United) workers were accused of pelting stones outside a polling station, as per reports. The seat is seeing a contest between the state's Deputy Chief Minister, and JD(U), RJD, and independent candidates.
An elderly woman and a young man were reportedly injured in the incident. The attack led to halting of voting for around an hour.
The process resumed after security personnel brought the situation under control.

Voting for Assembly elections in Meghalaya and Nagaland began at 7 am on 27 February 2023.
In Nagaland, 13 lakh eligible voters will decide the fate of 183 candidates in 59 of 60 seats. The Akuluto constituency was won uncontested by sitting BJP MLA Kazheto Kinimi.
The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the BJP are contesting the polls on a 40:20 seat-sharing basis. The Congress, which ruled the state till 2003 and does not have any member in the current House, has fielded 23 aspirants.
In Meghalaya, 369 candidates are in the fray on 59 seats, with 21.6 lakh eligible voters. Voting in Sohiong constituency was postponed due to death of a candidate.
Voting is underway at 3,419 polling stations, of which 640 have been categorised as &lsquo;vulnerable&rsquo; and 323 as &lsquo;critical&rsquo;, Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor said. Thirty-six of the 369 candidates are women, with the largest number of 10 women candidates being put up by the Congress.

While, the political battle in Meghalaya is between the National People&rsquo;s Party (NPP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC), in Nagaland, the saffron party is contesting in alliance with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party.
Meanwhile, Inter-state borders with Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh have been sealed to avoid any untoward incidents.

National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP)
NDPP, which was formed shortly before the 2018 assembly polls, went on to form government in the state along with the BJP as its ally.
Nagaland's chief minister and NDPP chief Neiphiu Rio's alliance with the BJP thwarted the single largest party in 2018 polls, the Naga People&rsquo;s Front (NPF), which is also Rio's erstwhile party.
Naga People&rsquo;s Front (NPF)
Naga People's Front, which was the oldest ally of BJP in the state, until Rio's NDPP came into the scene, has Shurhozelie Liezietsu at its helm of affairs.
NPF ruled Nagaland for 15 years, from 2003 until 2018, with BJP as its partner. NPF, despite emerging as the single largest party in 2018 polls with 26 MLAs, had to settle as opposition in the state because BJP decided to join hands with the NDPP.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
While BJP is in power in the state with an alliance with NDPP, it plays a secondary player with Neiphiu Rio being at the helm of affairs in the state.
The saffron party has once again decided to come together with NDPP for the current polls.
Indian National Congress (INC)
While Congress contested polls for Nagaland in 2018, it failed to open its account and win even a single seat.
It will be interesting to see whether the grand old party is able to improve its poll performance this time around.
The fate of the parties will be sealed on February 27 while the results will be declared on March 2.

PM Modi claimed the BJP has put a big dent in corruption by employing technology, as a result of which money sent from Delhi is directly credited to beneficiaries' bank accounts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday claimed that the Congress used Northeast as an ATM, while the BJP considers the eight states of the region as 'Ashtalakshmi' (eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi) and is working for its peace and development.
Addressing an election rally in Dimapur, he said the NDA is striving to bring permanent peace in Nagaland so that Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 is completely lifted from the state.
"The country can't be run by distrusting your own people but by respecting and solving their problems. Earlier, Northeast had politics of divide, but we have now transformed it into divine governance. The BJP does not discriminate people on the basis of religion or region and religion," Modi said.
Noting that there was political instability in Nagaland during the Congress rule, he claimed that the grand old party remote-controlled Northeast from Delhi, and siphoned off money meant for its development, while giving primacy to "dynasty politics, from Delhi to Dimapur".

"The Congress and its partners' policy for Northeast has been to 'get votes and forget'. Congress leaders from Delhi turned a blind eye to the problems of Nagaland. Ten years ago, nobody would have dreamt that circumstances can change in the region," he said.

The PM asserted that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has adopted three mantras for running Nagaland -- peace, progress and prosperity.
"The focus of every central government scheme has been women, tribals and the poor. The BJP also gave Nagaland its first woman Rajya Sabha MP," he said.
Noting that there has been a 75 per cent reduction in incidents of violence in Nagaland, he asserted that many youths have returned to the mainstream.
"We have worked for infrastructural development of Northeast. The change is evident. We will support the youth in sectors ranging from tourism to technology, and sports to start-ups," he added.

Two persons were kidnapped from the residence of a Naga People's Front (NPF) candidate and a vehicle was torched in Mon district of poll-bound Nagaland, a top police officer said on Tuesday.

One person was later released by the kidnappers while an operation was on to rescue the other, he said.

The two persons were not party members but were staying at the residence of the NPF candidate.
A vehicle was also torched in the same area where the kidnapping took place, he said.
&ldquo;We have registered a case and are hopeful of making some arrests soon,&rdquo; the police officer said.
Nagaland goes to the polls for its 60-member Assembly on February 27 and the counting of votes is scheduled on March 2.&nbsp;

Why the new Nagaland assembly may be Opposition-less

The new Nagaland government is heading towards an opposition-less government with almost all parties extending unconditional support to the NDPP-BJP alliance

In the state Assembly elections, for which results were declared on March 2, the pre-poll alliance partners &ndash; NDPP-BJP won 25 and 12 seats respectively, totaling 37 in the 60-member House.

Despite having one of the highest number of political parties, the new Nagaland government is heading towards an opposition-less government with almost all parties extending unconditional support to the NDPP-BJP alliance which won the polls held last month.
In the state Assembly elections, for which results were declared on March 2, the pre-poll alliance partners &ndash; NDPP-BJP won 25 and 12 seats respectively, totaling 37 in the 60-member House.
Other political parties, including NCP have won 7 seats, NPP &ndash; 5, LJP (Ram Vilas), Naga People&rsquo;s Front (NPF) &amp; RPI (Athawale) &ndash; 2 each, JD(U) &ndash; 1 and Independents &ndash; 4. This is the first time that Nagaland is witnessing the victory of so many political parties in the state Assembly elections. LJP(RV) and RPI (Athawale) are newbies in the State politics.
While the NDPP-BJP is yet to stake a claim for government formation, they have received unconditional support from other political parties to continue their second innings.
LJP (Ram Vilas), RPI (Athawale), JD(U) have already submitted letters of support to the alliance partners, sources said.
NCP, which is the third single largest party, submitted a letter extending &lsquo;unconditional&rsquo; support on Saturday to the Neiphiu Rio-led NDPP, newly elected NCP MLA Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe told PTI on Sunday.
Similarly, NPF general secretary Achumbemo Kikon, who is also one of the newly elected MLA, said that though a final decision has not been taken, the party, which has two members, is "likely to extend support to the government".
With all the political parties supporting the winning NDPP-BJP alliance, Nagaland will have another all-party government.
In the past, in 2015 and 2021 opposition-less governments were formed during the ongoing term of a government, but this would be the first ever Assembly which is set to be an opposition-less one even before the House has been sworn in.&nbsp;

The Congress has termed its performance in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland assembly elections as disappointing.

The Congress on Thursday said the assembly election results in the northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya were "disappointing" for it, but touted its victory in three assembly bypolls in as many states as "encouraging".
Congress general secretary communications Jairam Ramesh said the party would soon assess the assembly poll results and take corrective measures to strengthen the organisation.
"Our performance will be strong five years later," he said, pointing to the fact that the party fielded youth candidates in the northeastern states this time with an eye on the future.
The party won just five of the all 60 seats it contested in Meghalaya and failed to open its account in Nagaland where it fielded candidates in 23 out of 60 seats.
In Tripura where the Congress contested the election in alliance with the Left parties, it contested in 13 seats and bagged just three seats out of a total of 60.
The BJP and its alliance partners returned to power in Tripura and Nagaland. The National People's Party is the single-largest party in Meghalaya and the BJP is likely to support it in government formation.
Ramesh said the party has done well in by-elections in West Bengal, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu where its candidates won seats which were traditionally held by its rivals, but the performance in the assembly polls in the three northeastern states were disappointing.
He said the Congress won the Sagardighi assembly bypoll in West Bengal, Kasba Peth in Maharashtra and Erode East in Tamil Nadu.
Ramesh said the party won its first seat in the West Bengal Assembly and wrested the Kasba assembly constituency in Maharashtra from the BJP after almost 30 years and termed the victories "very encouraging".

The two women lawmakers - Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse of the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) are greenhorns in politics but defeated the sitting MLAs in Western Angami and Dimapur-III seats respectively.
By virtue of the result of her constituency being declared earlier in the day, Jakhalu became the first woman MLA in the Nagaland Assembly.
She defeated her nearest rival and sitting MLA Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) by 1,536 votes.
&ldquo;The victory is not mine alone, it belongs to my people who trusted me with their hopes and aspirations. I dedicate this victory to God and pledge to serve my constituents with honesty and integrity,&rdquo; Jakhalu tweeted.
A lawyer by education and social entrepreneur by profession, she is also the founder and chair of YouthNet Nagaland, an organisation working for the uplift of educated unemployed youth in the state to pursue entrepreneurship.
Talking to media persons after receiving the winning certificate from the Kohima District Election Officer, 56-years old Salhoutuonuo Kruse said her win is an opportunity to show that women can play an important role in the decision making body of the government for the welfare of the people. &ldquo;I am feeling happy and thankful to God and the people for providing me the opportunity to be an elected representative,&rdquo; she said while commenting on defeating the sitting MLA Keneizhakho Nakhro by seven votes.
In the straight fight in Western Angami seat of Kohima district, Kruse, who is the nominee of the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), polled 7,078 votes while the sitting MLA and Independent candidate Nakhro got just seven votes less.
&ldquo;It is all God&rsquo;s providence as the margin was very thin and also the support of the people that I got elected,&rdquo; she said.
On her priority as the first time woman MLA in the state, Kruse said she will try to help the government by playing an important role in the decision making process for the general welfare of the people.
Kruse is the widow of Kevisekho Kruse, a retired government employee who had contested the last Assembly poll on a NDPP ticket from the same seat but lost.
She had served as the president of the influential Angami Women Organisation and also as the executive in Angami Public Organisation, an apex tribal body here.
The two other women candidates in the fray for the Assembly election were Kahuli Sema of BJP and Rosy Thompson of Congress. Sema contested against sitting MLA Picto in Atoizu and lost by 102 votes. Thompson fought against sitting MLA Namri Nchang and four others in Tening seat at Pereng district.

The Congress and former BJP allies Naga People's Front will be disappointed with their showing in the state polls

The NDPP-BJP alliance bagged 37 seats in the 60-member Nagaland assembly, securing a straight second term in office in the northeastern state.
The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the BJP emerged victorious in 25 and 12 constituencies respectively.
None of the other parties reached the double figure with the NCP and the National People's Party (NPP), winning seven and five seats respectively.
While the LJP (Ram Vilas), RPI (Athawale) and the NPF equally shared six constituencies, the JD(U) got one seat. Independent candidates bagged four seats.
The Congress failed to win any seat in the state and secured a vote share of 3.55 per cent.
In the 2018 election, the NDPP-BJP contested the assembly election with a seat-sharing formula of 40:20, which the two parties maintained this time too.
The NDPP led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had won 18 seats while the BJP bagged 12.
While the NDPP secured a vote share of 32.22 per cent, the saffron party&rsquo;s share of polled votes is 18.81 per cent.
&ldquo;Congratulations to all the winning candidates of the Nagaland Assembly Elections 2023. As we have assured the electorates, let us pursue with sincerity to fulfill our goals and vision. May God Almighty help us,&rdquo; Rio said in a Twitter post.
BJP president JP Nadda said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s visionary leadership and Rio&rsquo;s governance will ensure peace while reaching new heights of progress in the state once more, he said.&nbsp;
