Kolkata Police imposes restrictions over 'input' on potential violent protests. More details

Kolkata Police Friday imposed section 144 of the IPC prohibiting any unlawful assembly of five or more persons for 60 days from May 28 to July 26 or until further order. As per CP Vineet Kumar Goyal, the development comes after information based on 'credible' sources indicated that 'violent demonstrations are likely to take place resulting in large-scale disturbances' of the public tranquillity and breach of the peace.

The order said breach of the peace in the area falls under Bowbazar Police Station, Hare Street Police Station and Headquarters Traffic Guard which is from K.C. Das Crossing towards Victoria House (C.E.S.C. Head Office) and its vicinity excluding Bentick Street".

The Police as per the order have implemented Section 144 Cr PC order in the vicinity of Dalhousie and Victoria House. In a social media post on X (previously Twitter), it said the restrictions are not new and had been imposed from time to time, urging people to refrain from spreading misleading information.
