Dr. Manmohan Singh retired from Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, putting an end to his three-decade-long Parliamentary innings in the Upper House.

Former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh on Wednesday retired from the Rajya Sabha, ending a three-decade-long stint in the Upper House.

The man renowned as the architect of India's economic liberalisation and a stalwart in Indian politics, has contested Lok Sabha elections only once.

Singh fought from the South Delhi seat in 1999 and lost.

From 1998 to 2004, when the BJP was in power, Manmohan Singh was the leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

Singh became a member of the House for the first time in October 1991. He was the finance minister in the Narasimha Rao government from 1991 to 1996. Singh is the only prime minister outside Nehru-Gandhi to have completed 10 years of two full terms in office from 2004 to 2014.
