Congress' Sowmya Reddy to contest against Tejasvi Surya, know all about activist-turned-politician

Sowmya Reddy, a Congress member, is gearing up to contest against Tejasvi Surya of the BJP in the Bangalore South constituency, aiming to become the first woman Member of Parliament from the city. Despite the area being a stronghold for the BJP, she's determined to make her mark.

Having previously served as an MLA for Jayanagar, Sowmya narrowly lost her re-election bid in the last Assembly elections. Now, she's taking on the role of challenging Tejaswi Surya, who currently holds the seat.

The constituency has been a BJP stronghold for many years, with H N Ananth Kumar representing it for six consecutive terms. However, Sowmya, daughter of senior Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy, remains undeterred, with strong backing from her party leaders.

She criticizes Surya for what she sees as divisive politics and a lack of representation for Karnataka in Parliament. Sowmya believes her track record as an MLA and the popularity of the Congress party will help her win over voters.

Sowmya Reddy was an environment activist

Reflecting on her journey, Sowmya's path to politics was unconventional. Initially an environmental activist, she transitioned into politics after realizing the importance of representation, especially for women.

Despite criticism of dynastic politics, Sowmya emphasizes the need for accessibility and commitment in candidates, regardless of their background.

Her activism roots run deep, from protesting against her father's policies to advocating for animal rights. Sowmya's experiences, both in India and abroad, have shaped her into a determined and outspoken politician.

On issues like the beef ban, Sowmya voices her opposition, arguing that such bans only drive the practice underground and disproportionately affect marginalized communities.

In her view, the focus should be on regulating practices rather than imposing bans, and she challenges the inconsistency in targeting specific types of meat consumption.

For Sowmya, politics is about advocating for the marginalized and challenging oppressive systems, echoing her lifelong commitment to activism and social justice.
