Allies in one state, but opponents in another. The members of the Maha Vikas Agadhi alliance which is in power in Maharashtra, will not be contesting elections in neighbouring Goa together.

Addressing a press conference, Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party said that their partner in the MVA, the Indian National Congress party, did not give any response to offers of fighting as an alliance in Goa. NCP and Sena are now planning to jointly contest on a significant number of seats in the coastal state.

Meanwhile, NDTV quoted Congress sources as saying that the Sena and NCP were making 'unreasonable demands'. The report said that the Maharashtra-based parties were seeking a greater number of seats than the Congress could afford.

The Congress has already allied with the Goa Forward Party for the upcoming elections. The grand old party is also said to have rejected alliance offers by Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress.

The other parties hoping to dislodge the BJP government led by Pramod Sawant include the Aam Aadmi Party. The Arvind Kejriwal-led outfit declared Amit Palekar as its CM candidate.

The coastal state will vote on February 14, and results will be announced on March 10.
