Delhi MCD result: BJP's reunification ploy, starry campaign deliver mixed bag; core support base secure

After 15 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party has been voted out of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Despite the long reign, the party gave the victorious Aam Aadmi Party a run for its money, by managing to cross the 100-mark in the 250-ward civic body.

The results show that the reunification of the MCD didn't neutralise anti-incumbency against the BJP, as it had reportedly hoped.

Also, the party's mega campaign involving multiple union ministers, chief ministers, and national leaders delivered a mixed bag, as the party didn't perform as badly as predicted in exit polls, but also did not manage to win.

However, the positive take-away for BJP is that its core support base appears to be safe as the party's vote share has risen since the 2017 MCD elections, and is only slightly lower than the 2020 Assembly polls.
