Can saffron ease symptoms of menstrual cramps?

For some women, periods are often accompanied with cramps, headaches, nausea and body pain. Medically referred to as dysmenorrhea, the condition may sometimes require medical intervention but mostly can be managed with pills or natural remedies at home!

Here's a quick rundown on the role saffron plays in relieving menstrual cramps and what makes it a wonder spice.

Among the most expensive spices in the world, saffron or kesar has anti-inflammatory properties that ease symptoms of pain. The highly aromatic spice is used as an analgesic and antispasmodic. What this essentially means is they're known to ease pain and muscle spasms, all common during the menstrual cycle.

In addition to PMS, saffron has been used as a age old medicine to treat common cold. Simply apply a few strands mixed in milk or on your forehead to get rid of congestion or a blocked nose.

You can add kesar to a boiling glass of milk or add it to your tea. You can have warm water with a strand of the spice to stave off cramps. Kesar lends a stunning goldenish hue to any dish, making it a culinary favourite!
