Amazon unveils Prime shopping edition at ₹399/year: Exclusive benefits for Android users

Amazon launches Prime Shopping Edition for ₹399/year, exclusive to Indian Android users. Focuses on enhancing the shopping experience with free shipping, one-day deliveries, excluding entertainment services

Amazon unveils Prime shopping edition at ₹399/year: Exclusive benefits for Android users

Amazon has unveiled a new membership tier called Prime Shopping Edition, exclusively for Android users in India. Priced at ₹399 per year, this subscription focuses solely on enhancing the shopping experience, offering perks like free shipping and one-day deliveries. Unlike the regular Amazon Prime, it does not include access to Prime Video, Music, Reading, Gaming, or other entertainment services.

This strategic move comes in response to Flipkart's recent introduction of VIP, a subscription model priced at ₹499, aimed at capturing the same market segment as Amazon Prime. However, Flipkart VIP targets shoppers primarily in major metro cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, where Amazon Prime already has a strong presence.

Saurabh Srivastava, Vice President of Amazon India, highlighted the widespread adoption of Prime across India, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. He emphasized the importance of the extensive product selection provided by Prime, which appeals to customers in these regions.

The Prime Shopping Edition membership is exclusive to the Amazon app or mobile browser on Android devices. This decision aligns with the popularity of Android smartphones in India, where there are over 650 million smartphone users, with more than 85% of them using Android devices.

As of now, the duration of this offer and whether it is limited to the Great Indian Festival remain unclear. Amazon's move to introduce a shopping-focused tier underscores its commitment to meeting the diverse needs of its customer base in India and staying competitive in the market.
