Lyricist Javed Akhtar needs no introduction as his career speaks volumes about his talent. Mr Akhtar was born on January 17, 1945, in Gwalior, Central India Agency.
He gained recognition as a screenplay writer with Salim Khan. The duo, famous as Salim-Javed, wrote memorable screenplays for some remarkable films. Javed Akhtar has been awarded the &lsquo;Avadh Samman&rsquo; for his immense contribution to Hindi cinema.
The legendary lyricist was previously married to actor Honey Irani with whom he has two children - Farhan and Zoya Akhtar.
In 1970s, he used to study music at poet, writer Kaifi Azmi&rsquo;s house. Mr Akhtar fell in love with his daughter, actor Shabana Azmi while pursuing his studies. When Kaifi Azmi learnt about their bond, he was reluctant initially as Javed Akhtar was already married. After Mr Akhtar divorced Honey Irani, Kaifi Azmi agreed to get his daughter married to the screenwriter.
Besides writing screenplays, Javed has also written a lot of evergreen lyrics for many films including &lsquo;Silsila&rsquo;, &lsquo;Duniya&rsquo;, &lsquo;Saagar&rsquo; and many other movies. The Boycott Bollywood trend As the year came to a close, Shah Rukh&rsquo;s &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; fell prey to the boycott and cancel culture that dominated Bollywood cinema in 2022 with people claiming that the yet to be released film&rsquo;s song &lsquo;Besharam Rang&rsquo; hurts Hindu sentiments as it shows Deepika Padukone wearing a saffron swimsuit.
Another big ticket starrer that faced boycott call was Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor&rsquo;s Lal Singh Chaddha. Users on social media dug out a statement by Aamir in 2015 on intolerance in India and called for the boycott of the film.
Ranveer Singh&rsquo;s nude photoshoot Pictures that launched a thousand headlines. Ranveer Singh&rsquo;s nude photoshoot for Paper magazine was embroiled in a controversy for days. While some people appreciated the actor, some accused him of obscenity hurting the sentiments of women. An FIR was also filed against the actor. &lsquo;The Kashmir Files&rsquo; controversy The Vivek Agnihotri directorial is one of the most debated movies of this year. Soon after its release, Anupam Kher starrer sparked a political row, with the Centre and the opposition having conflicting views about the film.
The Centre openly appreciated the film, saying that such movies &lsquo;reveal the truth&rsquo; and many BJP-ruled states decided to make the movie tax-free in the jurisdiction. However, the opposition criticised the Centre for &lsquo;promoting and endorsing&rsquo; the movie. Congress leader Digvijay Singh had accused the BJP of spreading hate by promoting this film.
Despite all the criticism, &lsquo;The Kashmir Files&rsquo; became one of the highest-grossing films of 2022. It was among the 15 films screened at the competition section of the International Film Festival of India. During the closing ceremony of the festival, jury head Nadav Lapid called it a &lsquo;vulgar,&rsquo; &lsquo;propaganda&rsquo; film.
Soon after his comments, the cast and the crew of the film slammed him and said the film represents the truth.
Later, Lapid apologised for hurting anyone&rsquo;s sentiments but stuck to his opinion about the film.
Bollywood actresses charged in Rs 200 crore extortion case Actors Jacqueline Fernandez and Nora Fatehi grabbed headlines after they were linked with conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar, who is accused of money laundering. They were questioned multiple times by the Enforcement Directorate in the Rs 200 crore extortion case and the agency revealed that the actors received several expensive gifts from Sukesh.
In August, Jacqueline was named as an accused in a supplementary charge sheet filed by ED in the case. Following which she had submitted a plea in PMLA court alleging that she was being falsely implicated by the agency while Nora, who had also received gifts from Sukesh, had been made a witness.
Days later, Nora filed a defamation suit against Jacqueline alleging she sought to criminally defame her in order to destroy her career to further her own interests, since they are both working in the same industry and have similar backgrounds, amongst other reasons. The matter is still being probed and Jacqueline is currently on bail, while conman Sukesh is behind bars.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial was one of the most talked about topics this year. Depp eventually won the lawsuit he had filed against his ex-wife for defaming him in a 2018 Washington Post article, where she called herself a survivor of domestic abuse. The jury awarded Depp with $15 million in damages, while Amber was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages. Recently, Amber agreed to a legal settlement with her ex-husband and fellow actor Johnny Depp. Amber will now pay Depp $1 million over claims he physically abused her.
Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars This year&rsquo;s Oscars made headlines after Will Smith stormed on stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock for joking about his wife who suffers from alopecia. Rock compared Jada Pinkett Smith's bald look to Demi Moore's appearance in the film &lsquo;G.I. Jane.&rsquo; This moment triggered awkward silence at the event and Academy announced a ban on Will Smith. Zeenat played the role of a village girl Roopa, who had a partially burnt face, in this Raj Kapoor directorial. The movie was slammed for excessive exposure but later, it went on to be considered as an artwork.

How it all started During the Paris Fashion Week, Kanye had held a private show for 100 guests, and he spotted wearing a &lsquo;White Lives Matter&rsquo; T-shirt there. Many criticised the slogan and said it was a fascist call in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. As per hate group tracker, Southern Poverty Law Centre, White Lives Matter is a neo-Nazi group.
Kanye posted anti-Semitic comments on Twitter and Instagram on October 8, 2022, which violated their policies. In one of his posts, the rapper had said he would soon go &lsquo;death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE&rsquo;. He claimed they toyed with him and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposed their agenda. His post was later removed.
Prior to this, he accused record producer Sean &lsquo;Diddy&rsquo; Combs of being influenced by &lsquo;the Jewish people&rsquo; on Instagram.

The debate around BTS members&rsquo; military enlistment has dominated news cycles for quite some time. On October 17, their agency Big Hit confirmed that the seven members will be fulfilling their mandatory military service. The news of BTS&rsquo;s upcoming enlistment was announced with a statement via Weverse and its official social platforms, which read that the band members were ready and honoured to serve their country.
The announcement comes just months after BTS members announced they would be taking a break to pursue individual projects.
Conscription law explained In South Korea, all &lsquo;able-bodied men&rsquo; from age 18 to 35 undergo 18-21 months of compulsory military service, and they are forced to suspend their education or professional careers. However, there are special exemptions for athletes, classical and traditional musicians and dancers who have enhanced the country&rsquo;s prestige by winning top prizes in specific competitions.
Those who have availed exemptions in non-designated categories and competitions have faced a lot of criticism. Evading military service or using exemptions, particularly by the wealthy and privileged, are not received well in the country.
People who are excluded from the draft are let go from the military after three weeks of basic training. It is also vital for them to perform 544 hours of volunteer work. They continue serving in their professional fields for 34 months.

Following the heavy ridicule, the makers tried to gain control over the situation by organising a special 3D screening of its teaser in Mumbai, which was viewed by select media. Even though it received a positive response, the audience who was unable to watch it, continued to share its critical opinion on the internet, not only for its questionable VFX but also for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
After the release Ayan Mukerji&rsquo;s &lsquo;Brahmastra&rsquo; and the teaser of &lsquo;Adipurush&rsquo;, we are left wondering if being high on VFX and CGI means comprising other aspects of films.

However, he feels that the audience as well filmmakers go overboard when they discuss film&rsquo;s elements and budget, which in turn creates a pressure on the stakeholders.
&lsquo;Instead, go ahead, make a movie and release it. Do not talk much about the number of days you spent on VFX or money invested in the film. When you keep the expectations in check, the kind of response that will come will also not be as polarised as you see nowadays. You talk so much about it and people start expecting the moon, and when the results are not on the same line, disappointment follows,&rsquo; Hindustan Times quoted him as saying.
Trade analyst Atul Mohan also weighed in on VFX being used as a marketing tool to promote films. He believes &lsquo;content is king, marketing is queen.&rsquo; Citing Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt starrer &lsquo;Brahmastra&rsquo; as a great example, he said they were the first ones to make a movie that was &lsquo;high on VFX and never had been attempted before in India&rsquo;. &lsquo;There is no harm in using that for marketing. You have seen several movies featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, but VFX was the film&rsquo;s USP,&rsquo; Atul Mohan was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.
Komal Nahta, film critic and trade analyst, feels that debates about VFX is &lsquo;meaningless&rsquo; and there is no harm in promoting a film ahead of its release. He also added that it has become fashionable to criticize and &lsquo;fringe elements create controversies around any and every film&rsquo;. He said &lsquo;social media is full of frustrated people whose full-time work is to run down efforts and money spent&rsquo;.
Talking about the criticism Om Raut&rsquo;s &lsquo;Adipurush&rsquo; has received, Komal Nahta said that &lsquo;if somebody feels the character does not look like Raavan, he/she needs to understand that it&rsquo;s the director&rsquo;s interpretation. Explaining the difference between the two ways to shoot a film, the VFX professional shared, &lsquo;When you are trying to make photoreal creatures, which are done in 3D, the first thing we try to replicate are the movements. How we move in reality is a live action film. Now, if I want to transfer my movement to a 3D creature, that&rsquo;s done by motion capturing. But that&rsquo;s just the animation. Through motion capturing, we cannot replicate the look and feel, the lighting, the texture, the hair and fur of the creature. All these things combined make a believable creature. So, everything has to be spot on.&rsquo;

Host of Hollywood celebrities such as Russo Brothers and Danny DeVito praised the epic fantasy. The film grossed a whopping Rs 1,000 crore at the worldwide box office.
‘RRR’ was re-released in theatres across United States in June and a Hindi-language version of the film streamed on Netflix, and ranked in the top 10 most watched titles in America for nine consecutive weeks.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, FFI committee head TS Nagabharana talked about ‘RRR’s Oscar snub and said the story matters not the collection or popularity. According to him, ‘Chhello Show’ is a ‘narrative of a regular Indian reality, and shows it in a broader sense, while tugging the emotional chords’. 
J Hurtado, a film critic, who’s part of team that’s running ‘RRR’s theatre campaign in the US, begs to differ from FFI’s opinion. He said that when it comes to any major awards in the US, popularity plays a key role. Citing examples of ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, he stated that ‘road for popular films to winning Academy Awards is not unknown’. 
He said that India’s selection for Oscars has a ‘very dicey history’. He opined that it’s better to send out a film that has the best chance of getting a nomination and winning the award. He further added that ‘the whole point of that Best International Feature Film is to highlight a country’s best output.’
‘It has lit a fire under some people to not let it (RRR) be forgotten. This ground swell of support has happened. People are talking about. The team didn’t go out to these high-profile names and pushed the film on them,’ said Hurtado.
Hurtado explained that the SS Rajamouli’s film is very focused on the story it’s telling and the characters are very driven. 
‘The action is over the top, but it never seems extraneous to the plot. It’s very well designed in a way that the American audience appreciates because we don’t get that very often,’ he said.
He revealed that their focus right now is to get as many people as possible to watch the film in the big screen.
Variance Films president Dylan Marchetti, who is backing ‘RRR’s Oscar campaign, believes that this film benefits from the vibe an audience gives it.
The fans of ‘RRR’ argue that the film could have been a strong contender for the Oscars owing to its ability to capture the imagination of audience worldwide. 
Several members of the Hollywood fraternity and film critics have also strongly reacted to the FFI’s decision. 
Filmmaker Adam McKay, the director of Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘Don’t Look Up’, called ‘RRR’s Oscar snub a ‘travesty’ and pledged to promote the film further.

However, they have now postponed the National Cinema Day to next week, stating that with the release of Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer, the footfalls of theatres have increased and theatre owners want to maximize their share.

Director Ayan Mukerji is overwhelmed with the positive response his film has received. In a recent interview with indianexpress.com, he revealed that he is targeting to release the second installment of &lsquo;Brahmastra&rsquo; in 2025.

Ayan Mukerji&rsquo;s &lsquo;Brahmastra&rsquo; seems to have finally broken Bollywood&rsquo;s long lull at the box office. The highly-anticipated magnum opus hit the theatres on September 9 and opened to mixed reviews. However, it has received solid numbers at the ticket booth and the Alia Bhatt-Ranbir Kapoor starrer reportedly raked in over ₹300 crore globally in the first week of its release. &nbsp;
This is just one evaluation. There have been different figures from different sources that have been reported, leaving many confused and obviously raising some doubts.
Different calculation in different places&nbsp;
Let us explain how the total collection of films is calculated. Gross box office collection refers to the total amount earned from ticket sales, while Nett collection is gross minus the amount deducted by the government in taxes, including service tax and entertainment tax. &nbsp;
Nett differs from state to state because these taxes differ in each state. Another aspect of the box office figures is distributor share, which is nett collection minus the rental charged by theatres.
There is no streamlined tracking system in India due to which the box office numbers of a film can never be an exact one. So, if multiple credible sources are reporting that the film has earned somewhere between ₹212 and ₹300 crore, it&rsquo;s safe to say that &lsquo;Brahmastra&rsquo; has secured impressive numbers and it might end Bollywood&rsquo;s long dry spell.
Boycott calls fail to stop &lsquo;Brahmastra&rsquo;s success&nbsp;
Over the past few months, Bollywood big-ticket films faced boycott calls, including &lsquo;Laal Singh Chaddha&rsquo;, &lsquo;Shamshera&rsquo;, &lsquo;Liger&rsquo; and &lsquo;Raksha Bandhan&rsquo;, and they failed miserably at the box office.

National Cinema Day postponed&nbsp;
The box-office success of &lsquo;Brahmastra&rsquo; has brought a smile on the faces of exhibitors. The Multiplex Association of India had planned to celebrate National Cinema Day on September 16 and the ticket prices were to be kept at a subsidized rate of only Rs. 75 on the occasion. However, they have now postponed the National Cinema Day to next week, stating that with the release of Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer, the footfalls of theatres have increased and theatre owners want to maximize their share.

Ahead of the film’s release, Deepika Padukone made headlines as she visited Jawaharlal Nehru University to stand in solidarity with the CAA-NRC protests. Several right-wing groups called her support a publicity gimmick and claimed that she was paid by the opposition party. BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga also called for a mass-boycott of all films starring Deepika Padukone on Twitter.
Padmavaat (2018)
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial, starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, was mired in controversies for almost a year. It faced trouble from fringed groups, who alleged that the movie distorted ‘historical facts’ and featured a romantic scene between Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji and Rani Padmini as a dream sequence.
Karni Sena vandalised the sets of the movie in Kolhapur's Masai plateau and held fierce protests in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Dangal (2016)
Aamir Khan’s former wife Kiran Rao talked about feeling unsafe in India in 2015. The actor also reiterated the same sentiments in an interview. Large section of people were disappointed with the then couple and deemed them to be ‘anti-national.’
The actor’s posters and effigies were burnt and #BoycottDangal was trending on social media.

One of the first posters of the Rajkumar Hirani directorial sparked controversy as it featured Aamir Khan posing naked while holding a transistor strategically. FIRs were filed against the makers for promoting nudity and hurting religious sentiments.
Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela (2013)
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial, starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, was initially titled ‘Ram-Leela’. However, various protests were held across the country as people considered this insulting to religious sentiments. The makers were asked to change the name by the Delhi High Court.
My Name is Khan (2010)
Shiv Sena and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) called for a ban on Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's film after the former expressed disappointment about the exclusion of Pakistani cricketers from the Indian Premier League (IPL).
