USA: shooting at Michigan university; suspect found dead after killing 3, injuring 5

At least three fatalities were reported and five were injured after a shooter opened fire inside the main campus of the Michigan State University on February 13, police said.

A manhunt launched for the suspect came to an end, when he was found dead with self-inflicted gunshot wounds, the police announced.

According to multiple reports, authorities have not ascertained what the man's connection was to the university as the police have not idenitified him yet.

The shootings began around 8:30 PM local time, at Berkey Hall, an academic building, and also ocurred nearby at the student union, a popular gathering spot, said Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the campus police department.

Michigan State University police had ordered students and staff to shelter in place after a report of shots fired around the school’s East Lansing campus.

The alert advised students and staff to “Secure-in-Place immediately” and to monitor 'alert.msu.edu' for information. The advisory was taken down after the shooter was found dead.

Footage posted on social media showed a heavy police presence around the campus.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was briefed on the shooting and said police were working to secure the area.

Authorities announced late Monday that all campus activities would be canceled for 48 hours, including athletics and classes. Via Twitter, people were advised not to come to campus on Tuesday.

Michigan State has about 50,000 students. East Lansing is about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.
