A fire that raced through a hall hosting a Christian wedding in northern Iraq killed at least 114 people and injured 150 others, authorities said Wednesday, warning the death toll could rise higher.
The fire happened in Iraq&rsquo;s Nineveh province in its Hamdaniya area, authorities said. That&rsquo;s a predominantly Christian area just outside of the city of Mosul, some 335 kilometres (205 miles) northwest of the capital, Baghdad.
Television footage showed flames rushing over the wedding hall as the fire took hold. In the blaze&rsquo;s aftermath, only charred metal and debris could be seen as people walked through the scene of the fire, the only light coming from television cameras and the lights of onlookers&rsquo; mobile phones.
Survivors arrived at local hospitals, receiving oxygen and bandaged, as their families milled through hallways and outside as workers organized more oxygen cylinders.
The health department in Nineveh province raised the death toll to 114. Health Ministry spokesman Saif al-Badr earlier put the number of injured at 150 via the state-run Iraqi News Agency.
&nbsp;&ldquo;All efforts are being made to provide relief to those affected by the unfortunate accident,&rdquo; al-Badr said.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered an investigation into the fire and asked the country&rsquo;s Interior and Health officials to provide relief, his office said in a statement online.
Najim al-Jubouri, the provincial governor of Nineveh, said some of the injured had been transferred to regional hospitals. He cautioned there were no final casualty figures yet from the blaze, which suggests the death toll still may rise.
There was no immediate official word on the cause of the blaze but initial reports by the Kurdish television news channel Rudaw suggested fireworks at the venue may have sparked the fire.
Civil defense officials quoted by the Iraqi News Agency described the wedding hall&rsquo;s exterior as being decorated with highly flammable cladding that were illegal in the country.
&ldquo;The fire led to the collapse of parts of the hall as a result of the use of highly flammable, low-cost building materials that collapse within minutes when the fire breaks out,&rdquo; civil defense said.

A judge has ruled that Donald Trump committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame and the White House.
Judge Arthur Engoron, ruling in a civil lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday, found that the former president and his company deceived banks, insurers and others by massively overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork used in making deals and securing loans.
Engoron ordered that some of Trump's business licenses be rescinded as punishment, making it difficult or impossible for them to do business in New York, and said he would continue to have an independent monitor oversee Trump Organization operations.
Trump's lawyer, Christopher Kise, said they intend to appeal the decision, calling it a &ldquo;miscarriage of justice&rdquo; and &ldquo;completely disconnected from the facts and governing law.&rdquo; &ldquo;The decision seeks to nationalize one of the most successful corporate empires in the United States and seize control of private property all while acknowledging there is zero evidence of any default, breach, late payment or any complaint of harm," Kise said.
Trump has long insisted he did nothing wrong. His son, Eric, said Engoron's ruling was &ldquo;an attempt to destroy my father and kick him out of New York.&rdquo; &ldquo;Today, I lost all faith in the New York legal system,&rdquo; Eric Trump, a Trump Organization executive and lawsuit defendant, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. &ldquo;Never before have I seen such hatred toward one person by a judge &mdash; a coordinated effort with the Attorney General to destroy a man's life, company and accomplishments.&rdquo; Engoron's decision, days before the start of a non-jury trial in James' lawsuit, is the strongest repudiation yet of Trump's carefully coiffed image as a wealthy and shrewd real estate mogul turned political powerhouse.
Beyond mere bragging about his riches, Trump, his company and key executives repeatedly lied about them on his annual financial statements, reaping rewards such as favourable loan terms and lower insurance costs, Engoron found.
Those tactics crossed a line and violated the law, the judge said, rejecting Trump's contention that a disclaimer on the financial statements absolved him of any wrongdoing.
&ldquo;In defendants' world: rent regulated apartments are worth the same as unregulated apartments; restricted land is worth the same as unrestricted land; restrictions can evaporate into thin air; a disclaimer by one party casting responsibility on another party exonerates the other party's lies," Engoron wrote in his 35-page ruling. "That is a fantasy world, not the real world.&rdquo; Manhattan prosecutors had looked into bringing criminal charges over the same conduct but declined to do so, leaving James to sue Trump and seek penalties that aim to disrupt his and his family's ability to do business in the state.
Engoron's ruling, in a phase of the case known as summary judgment, resolves the key claim in James' lawsuit, but several others remain. He'll decide on those claims and James' request for USD250 million in penalties at a trial starting October 2. Trump's lawyers have asked an appeals court for a temporary delay.
&ldquo;Today, a judge ruled in our favour and found that Donald Trump and the Trump Organization engaged in years of financial fraud," James said in a statement. "We look forward to presenting the rest of our case at trial.&rdquo; Trump's lawyers, in their own summary judgment bid, had asked the judge to throw out the case.
They argued James wasn't legally allowed to file the lawsuit because there wasn't any evidence that the public was harmed by Trump's actions. They also argued that many of the allegations in the lawsuit were barred by the statute of limitations.
Engoron, noting that he had &ldquo;emphatically rejected&rdquo; those arguments earlier in the case, equated them to the plot of the film "Groundhog Day." He fined five defense lawyers USD7,500 each as punishment for &ldquo;engaging in repetitive, frivolous&rdquo; arguments, but denied James' request to sanction Trump and other defendants.
James, a Democrat, sued Trump and the Trump Organization a year ago, alleging a pattern of duplicity she dubbed &ldquo;the art of the steal,&rdquo; a twist on the title of Trump's 1987 business memoir &ldquo;The Art of the Deal.&rdquo; The lawsuit accused Trump and his company of routinely inflating the value of assets like skyscrapers, golf courses and his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, padding his bottom line by billions.
Engoron found that Trump consistently overvalued Mar-a-Lago, inflating its value on one financial statement by 2,300%. The judge also rebuked Trump for lying about the size of his Manhattan apartment. Trump claimed his three-story Trump Tower penthouse was nearly three times its actual size, valuing it at USD327 million.
&ldquo;A discrepancy of this order of magnitude, by a real estate developer sizing up his own living space of decades, can only be considered fraud," Engoron wrote.
On X in the wake of the ruling, Eric Trump insisted his father's claims about Mar-a-Lago were correct, writing that the Palm Beach estate is &ldquo;speculated to be worth well over a billion dollars making it arguably the most valuable residential property in the country.&rdquo; Trump argued in sworn testimony for the case that the values on his financial statements didn't matter because the forms have a disclaimer that says they shouldn't be trusted. Trump argued that banks &ldquo;made a lot of money&rdquo; from him and didn't object to the valuations.
James' lawsuit is one of several legal headaches for Trump, the Republican front-runner in next year's election. He has been indicted four times in the last six months &mdash; accused in Georgia and Washington, D.C., of plotting to overturn his 2020 election loss, in Florida of hoarding classified documents, and in Manhattan of falsifying business records related to hush money paid on his behalf.
The Trump Organization was convicted of tax fraud last year in an unrelated criminal case for helping executives dodge taxes on perks such as apartments and cars. The company was fined USD1.6 million. One executive, Trump's longtime finance chief Allen Weisselberg, pleaded guilty and served five months in jail. He is also a defendant in James' lawsuit.
James' lawsuit does not carry the potential of prison time but could complicate Trump's ability to transact real estate deals. It could also stain his legacy as a developer.
James, who campaigned for office as a Trump critic and watchdog, started scrutinizing his business practices in March 2019 after his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen testified to Congress that Trump exaggerated his wealth on financial statements while trying to buy the NFL's Buffalo Bills. In the wake of Canada&rsquo;s allegations about India&rsquo;s &ldquo;potential&rdquo; involvement in the killing of a Khalistani separatist on its soil, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that New Delhi conveyed to Ottawa that it is not the government of India&rsquo;s policy and it is open to looking at &ldquo;specific&rdquo; and &ldquo;relevant&rdquo; information in the case.
&ldquo;Yes, I do have a comment. I&rsquo;ll share with you very frankly what we told the Canadians,&rdquo; Jaishankar said during a conversation at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) here Tuesday when asked if he had any comment on the allegations by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that &ldquo;agents&rdquo; of the government of India are linked to the killing of a Canadian Sikh.
"One, we told the Canadians that this is not the government of India&rsquo;s policy. Two, we told the Canadians saying that look, if you have something specific, if you have something relevant, let us know. We are open to looking at it,&rdquo; he said during a conversation with former US Ambassador to India and CFR Distinguished Fellow Kenneth Juster, in his first public comments on the issue.
Jaishankar asserted that one has to understand the context also because the &ldquo;picture is not complete&rdquo; without the context of it.
&ldquo;You also have to appreciate that in the last few years, Canada actually has seen a lot of organised crime relating to the secessionist forces, organised crime, violence, extremism. They're all very, very deeply mixed up,&rdquo; he said.
The minister said India has been talking about &ldquo;specifics and information&rdquo;.
&ldquo;We have actually been badgering the Canadians, we have given them a lot of information about organised crime leadership, which operates out of Canada. There are a large number of extradition requests. There are terrorist leaders who have been identified,&rdquo; he said, adding that one has to understand that there is an &ldquo;environment out there&rdquo;.
&ldquo;That is important in a way to factor in if you have to understand what is going on out there. And our concern is that it's really been very permissive because of political reasons. So we have a situation where actually our diplomats are threatened, our consulates have been attacked and often comments are made about &lsquo;there's interference in our politics&rsquo;. And, a lot of this is often justified as saying, well, that's how democracies work,&rdquo; Jaishankar said When asked by Juster whether the government of India will cooperate with Canada if there are specific pieces of evidence provided to it, Jaishankar said, &ldquo;If somebody gives me something specific, it doesn't have to be restricted to Canada, but if there is any incident which is an issue and somebody gives me something specific, as a government I would look at it. Of course, I would look into it.&rdquo; Trudeau said in the Canadian Parliament that &ldquo;Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the government of India and the killing&rdquo; of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil on June 18 in British Columbia, a charge angrily rejected by New Delhi as "absurd" and "motivated".
Jaishankar was asked about reports that intelligence about the killing was shared amongst the Five Eyes, the intelligence-sharing alliance of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States and that the FBI is telling Sikh leaders in the US that there are credible threats to them.
&ldquo;I'm not part of the Five Eyes. I'm certainly not part of the FBI. You are asking the wrong person,&rdquo; Jaishankar said.
He was then asked about Canadians providing documents to India that purported to show evidence that Indian officials in Canada were aware of the attack on Nijjar.
&ldquo;Are you saying the Canadians gave us documents,&rdquo; Jaishankar asked.
&ldquo;I have said that if somebody gives us specific or relevant information, we are prepared to look at it,&rdquo; he added.
When asked again if he had not received those intercepted communications from Canada, Jaishankar replied, &ldquo;If I had, would I not be looking at it?&rdquo;

An employee at the Sonic drive-in eatery was subsequently arrested, police said on June 4, 2023.
The accused, 54-year-old Jeffrey David Salazar was reportedly seen on video preparing the customer's food and then frantically searching the area as if he had lost something.
Salazar allegedly bought the cocaine from someone in the restaurant's parking lot.

The American soldier who crossed into North Korea two months ago is in American custody, two US officials said Wednesday.
One official said that Pvt Travis King was transferred to US custody in China. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss King's status ahead of the US announcement.
Earlier, North Korea said it would expel King. That announcement surprised some observers who had expected the North to drag out his detention in the hopes of squeezing concessions from Washington at a time of high tensions between the rivals.
The North's official Korean Central News Agency reported that authorities have finished their questioning of King but did not say when officials plan to expel him or where.
King, who had served in South Korea, sprinted into North Korea while on a civilian tour of a border village on July 18, becoming the first American confirmed to be detained in the North in nearly five years.
At the time he crossed the border, King was supposed to be heading to Fort Bliss, Texas, following his release from prison in South Korea on an assault conviction.
On Wednesday, the state news agency said that King confessed to illegally entering the North because he harbored &ldquo;ill feeling against inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination&rdquo; within the US Army and was &ldquo;disillusioned about the unequal US society.&rdquo; It has attributed similar comments to King before, and verifying their authenticity is impossible.
&ldquo;The relevant organ of the DPRK decided to expel Travis King, a soldier of the US Army who illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK,&rdquo; the state news agency said, using the initials of North Korea's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
US officials have said that King has been declared AWOL, which can be punished by time in the brig, forfeiture of pay or dishonourable discharge, with the severity based on the amount of time away and whether the service member was apprehended or returned on their own.
Following weeks of silence, North Korea confirmed in August that it had detained King, 23, and was investigating the circumstances surrounding his border crossing.
In an interview last month with The Associated Press, King's mother, Claudine Gates, said her son had &ldquo;so many reasons&rdquo; to want to come home.
&ldquo;I just can't see him ever wanting to just stay in Korea when he has family in America. He has so many reasons to come home,&rdquo; she said.
King, who is from Wisconsin, was among about 28,000 US troops stationed in South Korea as a deterrence against potential aggression from North Korea. US officials had expressed concern about King's well-being, citing the North's harsh treatment of some American detainees in the past.
Unauthorised crossings across the Demilitarized Zone separating the Koreas are extremely rare. The few Americans who crossed into North Korea in the past include soldiers, missionaries, human rights advocates or those simply curious about one of the world's most cloistered societies.
North Korea's decision to release King after 71 days appears relatively quick by the country's standards, especially considering the tensions between Washington and Pyongyang over the North's growing nuclear weapons and missile program and the United States' expanding military exercises with South Korea. Some had speculated that North Korea might treat King as a propaganda asset or bargaining chip.
In the end, the North apparently concluded that King simply wasn't worth keeping, possibly because the costs of providing him food and accommodation and assigning him guards and translators when he was never to be a meaningful source of US military intelligence, said Cheong Seong-Chang, an analyst at South Korea's Sejong Institute.
It wasn't immediately clear how King might be expelled. In some prior cases, captive Americans have been flown to Beijing. In others, an envoy has been sent to retrieve them.

That happened in 2017 when North Korea deported Otto Warmbier, an American college student who was in a coma at the time of his release and later died.
Bill Richardson &mdash; who up until his death served many presidential administrations as an unofficial diplomatic troubleshooter &mdash; travelled to North Korea in 2007 to recover the remains of servicemembers killed in the Korea War.

As reported by Space.com, the research team was able to determine the origin of the carbon molecules on the frozen surface by using the observations in the infrared spectrum using the JWST's Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) instrument.
It concluded that carbon molecules did not originate from meteorite impacts or other external sources.

Dozens of people faced criminal charges Wednesday after authorities said groups of young people, apparently working together, smashed their way into stores in several areas of Philadelphia, stuffing plastic bags with merchandise and fleeing.
Police said they made at least 52 arrests. Burglary, theft and other counts have been filed so far against at least 30 people, three of whom are minors, according to Jane Roh, spokesperson for the Philadelphia district attorney's office.
The flash mob-style ransacking Tuesday night at stores including Foot Locker, Lululemon and Apple came after a peaceful protest over a judge's decision to dismiss murder and other charges against a Philadelphia police officer who shot and killed a driver, Eddie Irizarry, through a rolled-up window.
Those doing the ransacking were not affiliated with the protest, Interim Police Commissioner John Stanford said at a news conference, calling the group &ldquo;a bunch of criminal opportunists.&rdquo; At least 18 state-run liquor stores were broken into, leading the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to close all 48 of its Philadelphia retail locations and one in suburban Cheltenham on Wednesday. No employees were hurt Tuesday night, but &ldquo;some were understandably shaken,&rdquo; said liquor board spokesperson Shawn Kelly.
The stores were &ldquo;closed in the interest of employee safety and while we assess the damage and loss that occurred. We will reopen stores when it is safe to do so and when the damage is repaired,&rdquo; Kelly said.
Video on social media showed masked people in hoodies running out of Lululemon with merchandise and police officers grabbing several and tackling them to the sidewalk. Photos of a sporting goods store at a mall showed mannequins and sneakers scattered on the sidewalk.
The thefts and unrest stretched from downtown to northeast and west Philadelphia, leaving smashed display windows and broken storefront coverings. Police said seven cars were stolen from a lot in the northeast. One of the cars had been recovered as of Wednesday afternoon, &ldquo;This destructive and illegal behaviour cannot and will not be tolerated in our city,&rdquo; Mayor Jim Kenney, a Democrat, said on social media, calling it a &ldquo;sickening display of opportunistic criminal activity.&rdquo; His administration is working with police to assess &ldquo;which areas of the city may need increased coverage or additional resources,&rdquo; he said.
People appeared to have organised efforts on social media, Stanford said. Police are investigating &ldquo;that there was possibly a caravan of a number of different vehicles that were going from location to location" and that a couple of people in the caravan were in custody.
There was a high number of young people in Philadelphia's downtown business corridor, called Centre City, shortly before 8 p.m., and some officers stopped a group of males &ldquo;dressed in black attire and wearing masks," according to a police news release.
At that time, reports and 911 calls came in about the Foot Locker store. When police arrived, they found it had been &ldquo;ransacked in a coordinated attack,&rdquo; the news release said. The juveniles fled, and at least one adult as arrested.
By 8:12 p.m., police responded to similar calls at Lululemon, where people were arrested. Shortly afterwards, calls directed police to the Apple Store. No arrests were made there, but the store lost phones and tablets, although many have been recovered, the news release said.
No injuries were immediately reported, but CBS Philadelphia reported that a security guard was assaulted at the Foot Locker.
In North Philadelphia, a pharmacy owner said his store was broken into for a third time and items taken.
&ldquo;I understand, you know, desperate times for people call for desperate measures and there are plenty of opportunists that just see drugs," Benjamin Nachum told CBS. He said, though, that a safe in his store did its job, &ldquo;so there won't be any illicit narcotics hitting the street.&rdquo; The thefts occurred the same day Target announced it will close nine stores in four states, including one in New York City's East Harlem neighbourhood, and three in the San Francisco Bay Area, saying that theft and organised retail crime have threatened the safety of its workers and customers.

A NASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts returned to Earth on Wednesday after being stuck in space for just over a year. American Frank Rubio set a record for the longest US spaceflight &mdash; a result of the extended stay.
The trio landed in a remote area of Kazakhstan, descending in a Soyuz capsule that was rushed up as a replacement after their original ride was hit by space junk and lost all its coolant while docked to the International Space Station.
What should have been a 180-day mission turned into a 371-day stay. Rubio spent more than two weeks longer in space than Mark Vande Hei, who held NASA's previous endurance record for a single spaceflight.
Russia holds the world record of 437 days, set in the mid-1990s.
The Soyuz capsule that brought Rubio and cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin back was a replacement launched in February. Russian engineers suspect a piece of space junk pierced the radiator of their original capsule late last year, midway through what should have been a six-month mission.
Engineers worried that without cooling, the capsule's electronics and any occupants could overheat to dangerous levels, so the craft returned empty.
There wasn't another Soyuz to launch a fresh crew until this month. Their replacements finally arrived nearly two weeks ago.
&ldquo;No one deserves to go home to their families more than you,&rdquo; the space station's new commander, Denmark's Andreas Mogensen, said earlier this week.
Prokopyev told ground controllers throughout the descent that all three were feeling good. They experienced more than four times the force of gravity as their capsule streaked through the atmosphere and came to a touchdown in the barren Kazakh steppes, ending up on its side. Helicopters moved in with recovery crews to fetch the astronauts.
&ldquo;It's good to be home,&rdquo; Rubio said after being pulled from the capsule.
Rubio, 47, an Army doctor and helicopter pilot, said at a news conference last week that he never would have agreed to a full year in space if asked at the outset. He ended up missing important family milestones including the oldest of his four children finishing her first year at the US Naval Academy and another heading off to West Point.
Rubio had said the psychological aspect of spending so long in space was tougher than he expected. He may hold on to this record for a while. NASA has no plans as of now for more yearlong missions.
It was the first spaceflight for Rubio and Petelin, 40, an engineer. Prokopyev, 48, an engineer and pilot, has now pulled two long station stints.
They logged 157 million miles (253 million kilometres) since launching from Kazakhstan last September and circled the world nearly 6,000 times.
