US warns Indian students to maintain visa status amid Trump policy focus

Amid heightened enforcement of immigration policies under the Trump administration, the US government has issued a warning to Indian nationals studying at American institutions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining their student status to ensure eligibility for future visas. The advisory highlighted that students who neglect their academic commitments—by skipping classes, withdrawing, or leaving their study programs without notifying their institutions—risk having their student visas revoked.

In an announcement on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the US Embassy in India urged students to comply with the terms of their visas and maintain their student status diligently. The post stated, "If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future US visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues."

In a previous post, the Embassy also warned that overstaying one's authorized period in the United States could result in deportation and potentially lead to a permanent travel ban to the country.

This warning arrives shortly after a significant legal development in which a federal judge in California, US District Judge Jeffrey S. White, issued a temporary injunction preventing the Trump administration from stripping international students of their legal status while ongoing legal challenges are adjudicated. The order, issued in Oakland, prohibits the government from detaining or relocating students based on their legal status until the resolution of the case, as reported by the Associated Press.

It is important to note that students remain subject to arrest for reasons unrelated to their immigration status, particularly if convicted of a serious and violent crime that carries a prison sentence exceeding one year.
