Senegal: locals exhume, burn remains of man after discovering he was gay

Homosexuality in Senegal was punished even after death. A man’s body was exhumed and burnt after locals discovered that he was gay.

The man’s family was reportedly not permitted to bury him in the holy city of Touba, after which they were forced to bury him secretly at a nearby cemetery. His corpse was pulled out by a large crowd a day later and set on fire.

Four men have been arrested after the incident, according to Metro News. Photos of the scene show hundreds of people gathered around the man’s remains. The man was identified as 31-year-old Cheikh Fall.

Homosexuality is strictly prohibited in the West African nation. Offenders can be put behind bars for five years if caught.

‘These extremely serious acts, which amount to barbarism, challenge the authorities and cannot go unpunished,’ the Kaolack Public Prosecutor’s Office said.
