Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gasc&oacute;n announced the charges in the death of Edward Bronstein, which the LA County coroner said was caused by &ldquo;acute methamphetamine intoxication during restraint by law enforcement.&rdquo;
&ldquo;The officers had a legal duty to Mr. Bronstein,&rdquo; Gasc&oacute;n said during a news conference. &ldquo;He was in their custody. We believe that they failed their duty and their failure was criminally negligent, causing his death.&rdquo;
Bronstein, 38, was taken into custody following a traffic stop on March 31, 2020, and died at a CHP station in Altadena, north of downtown Los Angeles. His death came less than two months before George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis as he, too, repeatedly told officers, &ldquo;I can&rsquo;t breathe.&rdquo;
Luis Carrillo, an attorney representing Bronstein's father, said in an email that his client &ldquo;is glad that the CHP officers were charged with crimes because the CHP officers took a human life and left a family in grief and sadness.&rdquo;
A nearly 18-minute video showing the officers&rsquo; treatment of Bronstein was released last year following a judge&rsquo;s order in an ongoing federal lawsuit that Bronstein&rsquo;s family filed against the officers, alleging excessive force and a violation of civil rights.
In a statement, CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee extended condolences to the family and said the agency's mission is to prioritize all Californians' safety.

&ldquo;I am saddened that Mr. Bronstein died while in our custody and care. Any death in custody is a tragedy that we take with upmost seriousness,&rdquo; Duryee said. &ldquo;I recognize this case will now move through the court system, and I respect the judicial process.&rdquo;
The California Association of Highway Patrolmen, the union that represents rank-and-file CHP officers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The seven CHP agents, who were put on administrative leave Wednesday, were identified as Sgt. Michael Little and Officers Dionisio Fiorella, Dustin Osmanson, Darren Parsons, Diego Romero, Justin Silva and Marciel Terry.
They face one count each of involuntary manslaughter and one felony count of assault under the color of authority, and up to four years in prison.
The registered nurse was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
An arraignment has not yet been scheduled.
Bronstein's death prompted the CHP to change its policies to prevent officers &ldquo;from using techniques or transport methods that involve a substantial risk of positional asphyxia,&rdquo; the agency said. Additional training was also ordered for uniformed officers.
In September 2021, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law barring police from using certain face-down holds that have led to multiple unintended deaths. The bill was aimed at expanding on the state&rsquo;s ban on chokeholds in the wake of Floyd&rsquo;s murder.

Tech companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft had opposed the lawsuit. The US has so far issued nearly 1,00,000 work authorisations to spouses of H-1B workers, a significantly large number of whom are Indians.
In her order, Judge Chutkan said the primary contention of Save Jobs USA is that Congress has never granted the Department of Homeland Security authority to allow foreign nationals, like H-4 visa-holders, to work during their stay in the United States.

But that contention runs headlong into the text of the Immigration and Nationality Act, decades of executive-branch practice and both explicit and implicit congressional ratification of that practice, she wrote.
The judge wrote that Congress has expressly and knowingly empowered the US Government to authorize employment as a permissible condition of an H-4 spouse's stay in the United States.
The fact that the federal government has had longstanding and open responsibility for authorizing employment for similar visa classes further manifests Congress' approval of it exercising that authority, she said.
The Department of Homeland Security and its predecessors have authorized employment not just for students, but also for their spouses and dependents, Judge Chutkan wrote in the ruling.
Also, the Department of Homeland Security has long extended work authorization to spouses of foreign government officials and spouses of employees or officers of international organizations, the judge wrote as she dismissed the lawsuit filed by Save Jobs USA.
Ajay Bhutoria, a prominent community leader and advocate for immigrant rights, has applauded the decision by the court to allow H1B spouses to work and support their families.
The H1B visa programme is designed to allow skilled foreign workers to come to the United States and work for American companies. However, until recently, H1B spouses were not allowed to work, which often placed a significant financial burden on families, he said.

The announcement comes one day after Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Moscow's oil sales to India had surged more than twentyfold last year.
Rosneft said that representatives of the two oil companies also discussed the "possibilities of making payments in national currencies," pointing to Russia's efforts to de-dollarise its economy.
Russia, a major producer and key ally of the OPEC oil cartel, cut crude production by 500,000 barrels per day this month in response to the Western sanctions.
Rosneft earlier this month posted a sharp drop in annual profit in the wake of Western sanctions against Russia.

Beijing warned Wednesday that it was "resolutely opposed" to any meeting between Tsai and McCarthy and vowed to take "resolute measures to fight back" if it goes ahead.
"If (Tsai) engages with US House Speaker McCarthy, it will be another provocation that seriously violates the One China principle, undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian said.
Tsai's trip follows Honduras's decision this month to open diplomatic relations with Beijing, leaving Belize and Guatemala among just 13 countries that have official ties with Taipei.
"External pressure will not hinder our determination to go global," Tsai told reporters at the airport before leaving. "We are calm and confident. We will not succumb and we will not provoke (others)."
"There's absolutely no reason for China to use that as a pretext to overreact or to engage in further coercion directed at Taiwan," a senior US administration official told reporters on condition of anonymity, adding that the stopover did not represent a change in US policy.
Beijing's foreign ministry said Washington "blindly connives with and supports Taiwan independence and secessionist forces".
Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning urged the United States at a briefing on Wednesday to stop any form of official exchanges with Taiwan and to "stop the dangerous act of undermining the political foundation of China-US relations".

Aerial footage shot by drone shows snorkelers following dolphins as they swim away. The department said its video and photos showed swimmers &ldquo;who appear to be aggressively pursuing, corralling and harassing the pod.&rdquo;
Enforcement officers contacted the group while they were in the water, and told them about the violation. Uniformed officers met the swimmers on land where state and federal officials launched a joint investigation.
Hawaii&rsquo;s spinner dolphins feast on fish and small crustaceans that surface from the ocean&rsquo;s depths at night. When the sun rises, they head for shallow bays to hide from tiger sharks and other predators.
To the untrained eye, the dolphins appear to be awake during the day because they&rsquo;re swimming.
But because they sleep by resting half of their brains and keeping the other half awake to surface and breathe, they may be sleeping even when they&rsquo;re maneuvering through the water.

Schmidt's mother, Kathy, said he was at Starbucks with his wife and his young daughter, according to Global News.
Vancouver police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison said police are appealing for more witnesses and video to help them determine a motive in the killing.
"There's a significant amount of evidence to tell us what happened. What we are focusing on now is why did this happen. What are the events that transpired in the moments leading up to this very serious crime ... that's something that may take some time for us to fully understand," he said.

Officials further elaborated saying Hale left behind a manifesto, had maps of the school detailing surveillance and entry-exit points, and was "prepared for a confrontation with law enforcement.&nbsp;
In an interview with NBC News, the Nashville police chief said the suspect was likely plotting a broader attack, as the manifesto "indicates that there was going to be shootings at multiple locations, and the school was one of them."
Armed with at least two assault rifles and a handgun, Hale entered The Covenant School, a Christian academy, from a side entrance, allegedly shooting through a door -- firing multiple shots while advancing through the building, according to police.&nbsp;

Citing various studies, The Guardian further reported that the hippos are polluting the area they are residing in, in Colombia and that there has been a rise in hippo-human conflict.&nbsp;

Bangladesh journalist Shamsuzzaman Shams was arrested by Dhaka police on March 29 after an article he wrote for a leading newspaper on rising food prices in the country went viral.&nbsp;
Shams was arrested by officers in plainclothes in the early hours of March 29 from his house in Savar, an industrial town near Dhaka, his employer Prothom Alo revealed.&nbsp;
The journalist was charged with producing 'fake and fabricated news' under the controversial media law, the Digital Security Act (DSA).&nbsp;
Country's home minister Asduzzaman Khan confirmed that Shams had been arrested under the DSA for 'smearing the image of the government with false news' and for raising questions about Bangladesh's achievements. An allegation which the newspaper has denied.&nbsp;
The article published on the country's independence day, March 26, contained quotes from daily wagers including one that denounced the independence when they could not even afford basic food items.&nbsp;

This is reportedly the third time when Pakistan's Twitter account has been restricted in India.
Earlier in October 2022, the Twitter account of the Pakistan government was withheld in India. It was withheld earlier in July as well but had been reactivated and was visible. According to Twitter guidelines, the microblogging site takes such action in response to a valid legal demand, such as a court order.&nbsp;
In June last year, Twitter in India banned official accounts of Pakistan Embassies in the United Nations, Turkey, Iran and Egypt. In August, India blocked eight YouTube-based news channels, including one operating from Pakistan and one Facebook account for posting "fake, anti-India content" online.
