Floods Wash Away Friendship Bridge Linking Nepal and China

Kathmandu, Jul 8 (PTI) At least eighteen individuals remain missing after severe monsoon rains caused a river to flood on Tuesday, washing away the Friendship Bridge that connects Nepal to China. The heavy rainfall in China on Monday night triggered a deluge in Nepal's Bhotekoshi River.

The Miteri Bridge in the Rasuwa district, located 120 km northeast of Kathmandu, was swept away by floodwaters at approximately 3:15 am on Tuesday. Among those missing are eighteen people, including six Chinese nationals, as reported by official sources. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) stated that a joint team of the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police successfully rescued eleven individuals, including two police personnel.

Arjun Paudel, the chief district officer of Rasuwa, indicated that significant damage was caused by the flood. Authorities have issued advisories for residents downstream to relocate to safer areas. The flooding also demolished several homes and swept away five electric vehicles imported from China.

In a related incident, police recovered two bodies from the Trishuli River in the Gajuri Rural Municipality of Dhading district on Tuesday morning, although their identities have not yet been confirmed. Moreover, a team from the Nepal Army successfully rescued 23 laborers, including one Chinese national, who had been stranded at the Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project. This area was immersed by floodwaters following heavy rainfall, which partially damaged the hydropower plant, according to local authorities.
