Luxury cruise still stuck after running aground near Greenland with 206 people on board

A luxury cruise ship has been stranded after it ran aground in northwestern Greenland. Help for the 206 people on board will arrive on Friday, with the nearest vessel being 1,200 miles away.

To add to the passengers’ trouble, several cases of COVID-19 have been reported on board, as per Sydney Morning Herald. The Bahamas-flagged Norwegian cruise ship reportedly has enough supplies to last till help comes.

Brian Jensen of the Joint Arctic Command said in a statement there is no immediate danger to human life or the environment, but that officials “take this incident very seriously,” Associated Press reported.

The ship was expected to free itself by using the high tide on Tuesday, however, its attempts failed. “Regardless, the most important thing for us is that everyone gets to safety.” Jensen said.

The 104.4-meter long and 18-meter wide Ocean Explorer ran aground on Monday in Alpefjord in the Northeast Greenland National Park. It’s the world’s largest and most northerly national park and is known for icebergs and the musk oxen that roam the coast.
