Japanese princess gives up royal status and $1.3 million -- for love

'Princess Diaries' comes to life with Japan's Princess Mako giving up her royal status to wed a college classmate. The wedding is most likely set for October, after being delayed for years due the controversy over her fiance being a commoner.

The 29-year-old Mako and Kei Komuro had announced their engagement in 2017.

Under archaic Japanese law, a marriage between a royal and a commoner requires the former to give up their royal status.

Though Princess Mako is entitled to a one-off payment worth $1.35 million on relinquishing royalty, she has agreed to forego the payment after massive public backlash.
