Japan Enhances Defense with Arrival of F-35B Stealth Jets

Japan receives its first three F-35B fighter jets to enhance defense, with plans for more by 2026, positioning Japan as the largest F-35 operator outside the US.

Japan Enhances Defense with Arrival of F-35B Stealth Jets

Tokyo, Aug 7 (AP) Japan has taken a significant step in strengthening its defense capabilities with the arrival of its first three F-35B stealth fighter jets at an air base in the country's south. These aircraft mark the latest initiative in response to rising regional tensions.

The arrival of these jets is a part of a scheduled deployment of four F-35Bs at the Nyutabaru Air Base in Miyazaki prefecture, with the fourth jet expected to arrive later. The Air Self-Defence Force confirmed this deployment.

One of the key features of the F-35B jets is their ability for short take-off and vertical landing. These aircraft are intended to operate from Japan's modified helicopter carriers, the Izumo and the Kaga, which underwent modifications to accommodate the F-35B.

The Defence Ministry has announced that Nyutabaru will receive four additional F-35Bs by the end of March 2026. Japan perceives China as a significant regional threat, prompting an accelerated military buildup on its southwestern remote islands.

Meanwhile, Japan is constructing a runway on Mageshima Island, situated 160 kilometers south of the Nyutabaru base, to facilitate F-35B flight exercises. Although the construction delays mean that these exercises will initially take place at Nyutabaru until approximately 2030, this has led to protests from local residents concerned about aircraft noise.

Japan's defense strategy includes a plan to deploy a total of 42 F-35B jets alongside 105 conventional take-off and landing F-35As. This acquisition strategy positions Japan as the largest operator of F-35s outside of the United States.
