Istanbul talks: Ukraine's major proposals during negotiations with Russia

Ukraine made several proposals during the meeting with Russia to discuss the end of the month-long war. The talks were facilitated by Turkey and held in Istanbul.

Ukraine asked for legally binding security guarantees from western nations that they come to its aid in case of an attack by another country. Ukraine proposed United States, China, France and Britain -- all members of the United Nations Security Council -- as well as Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, Poland and Turkey as the guarantor nations.

The Ukrainian side also said that if the security guarantee comes through they could become neutral and drop the plan of joining NATO. One of the reasons cited by the Putin govt for its invasion of Ukraine was NATO’s expansion via Ukraine near Russia’s borders.

The Zelenskyy govt also refused to host any foreign military bases on Ukraine’s territory.

It also wanted assurances that the security pact would not affect its possible membership of European Union and that the guarantor nations would help Ukraine join the bloc

Ukraine has also agreed to temporarily exclude Crimea and separatist region of Donbas from the security accord in order to ensure speedy implementation of the pact.
