Imran Khan Delays Protests Amid Iran-Israel Conflict

Imran Khan delayed planned PTI protests for two weeks due to the Iran-Israel conflict, emphasizing the need for national unity amid rising tensions.

Imran Khan Delays Protests Amid Iran-Israel Conflict

Islamabad, Jun 18 (PTI) — Pakistan's jailed former prime minister, Imran Khan, has postponed his party’s planned nationwide protests for two weeks due to global developments following the Iran-Israel conflict. Earlier last month, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder announced his intention to lead upcoming protests against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition government from prison. However, the exact protest date was not specified.

Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail on Tuesday, Khan's sister, Noreen Niazi, stated that the PTI leader has decided to delay the nationwide movement for two weeks. This comes in response to the international situation following the Iran-Israel conflict, emphasizing the need for national unity amid escalating regional tensions, as reported by The News International. "Imran Khan is keenly observing global developments and underscores the significance of national cohesion," she commented.

“We are awaiting policy statements from the prime minister, president, and field marshal before taking further steps,” Niazi was quoted saying in The Express Tribune. She mentioned that while Khan had not met anyone over the past week, he remains informed about global events and believes the situation will have direct consequences for Pakistan. The 72-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has been imprisoned since August 2023, facing multiple charges ranging from corruption to terrorism following his ouster from power via the opposition's no-confidence motion in April 2022.
