Hawaii’s Maui region engulfed in flames, 36 dead

A raging wildfire in Hawaii’s Maui region has killed at least 36 people so far. While efforts to extinguish the blaze are underway, officials said recovery could take years.

The unexpected wildfire has left behind burned cars, charred structures and piles of rubble across the island.

The flames forced some people to jump into the ocean in order to avoid injury. Clouds of toxic smoke were also seen covering the Maui region.

Wildfires, whipped by strong winds from Hurricane Dora passing far to the south, took the island of Maui by surprise.

The American airforce has also joined efforts to put the fire out. Two UH-60 Blackhawks and one CH-47 Chinooks were mobilized for firefighting efforts. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard’s rescue operations are being aided by MH-60R Seahawk helicopters deployed by the Navy.

Hawaii Department of Transportation, Deputy Director for Highways Ed Sniffen said more than 11,000 people have been evacuated from Maui. He thanked airlines that service the area for their help.
