'Ghostwriter' cyberattacks: EU suspects Russian hand, bid to target German polls

The European Union has said that malicious cyber activities against member states were observed and the attacks seem to emerge from Russian malware 'Ghostwriter'.

According to the bloc, such activities threaten the 'core functioning of our democracies'.

Germany also slammed attempts to influence the country's upcoming election through 'Ghostwriter', stating that it had 'reliable information' to attribute these attacks to specifically Russian military intelligence service GRU.

The European Union warned to take action, asking Moscow to follow norms of responsible state behaviour in cyberspace.

'Ghostwriter' targets news articles and documents by fabricating them to appear as though public officials published them, resulting in a spread of false information.
