Gaza Protesters Arrested In Chicago After Security Fence Breach Near Democratic National Convention

Dozens of protesters broke through a security fence near the site of the Democratic National Convention on its opening day, as thousands took to the streets in protest of Israel's war in Gaza.

Families with babies in strollers, students, elected leaders and others holding signs and flags joined the march to the United Centre in Chicago, where the convention is being held. Protesters demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and want the Biden-Harris administration stop sending weapons to Israel.

As the larger group marched peacefully, a few dozen broke away, and tore down pieces of the outer security fence.

Several protesters who had managed to get through the fence were detained and handcuffed by the security forces.

Chicago police said two people were arrested on misdemeanor charges of resisting police and damaging property.

Law enforcement personnel contained the breach immediately and prevented the group from getting through the inner cordon. Police in blue helmets with shields and carrying batons were seen pushing back demonstrators.

Security personnel later advanced on a park near the convention centre to clear out protesters.
