From Delhi Univ to Mayor in UK: Sunil Chopra elected by London borough of Southwark

An Indian-origin businessman in the United Kingdom has been elected mayor for the second time. Sunil Chopra's victory in the London borough of Southwark is even more significant because the council has only 2% people of Indian origin.

Chopra took oath as mayor on May 21. He had served as Southwark mayor in 2014-15, and held the deputy mayor post thrice.

India-born Chopra's political journey began at the Delhi University in the 1970s. He served as President at the College of Vocational Studies in 1972, then Supreme Councillor in 1973-74 while pursuing LLB, according to news agency PTI. He was also Delhi president of the National Students' Union of India, or NSUI, the Congress' student wing.
