Families of Nepal plane crash victims to miss out on millions in compensation: Report

Families of the 72 victims of the Nepal plane crash, including 5 Indians, are likely to miss out on millions in compensation because of delay in passage of the Air Carriers’ Liability and Insurance Bill, The Kathmandu Post reported on January 20.

In 2020, the Nepal Government finalised a draft bill to increase minimum compensation for injury or death of a passenger from 20,000 US dollars to 100,000 US dollars for domestic airlines.

However, the bill is yet to be cleared both by the Cabinet and the Nepalese Parliament, the report said.

As per the Montreal Convention 1999, the global minimum compensation is 1,75,000 US dollars.

However, Nepal is yet to ratify the proposed draft bill, the report added.
