'Conditions in our country not right': Iran's football captain | FIFA World Cup 2022

Iran captain Ehsan Hajsafi addressed the media on Sunday and told reporters "conditions in our country are not right."

Hajsafi spoke out on the eve of his team's opening World Cup Group B game against England in Doha on Monday.

The death of Mahsa Amini sparked widespread protests in September after the 22-year-old died in custody having been detained for allegedly failing to follow the country's Islamic dress code.

Since then protests against the rules forcing women to wear the hijab have expanded into widespread discontent, with more than 380 people said to have been killed by security forces.

Left-back Hajsafi called for change and sent condolences to bereaved families as Iran prepared for their third successive appearance at the World Cup.

There have been calls for Iran to be kicked out of Qatar 2022, having acknowledged supplying weapons to Russia on top of the continued oppressive regime.
