"Talking about the shifts in the startup landscape, Zepto co-founder added, "I think we've seen most of the startup ecosystem has happened over the past decade, from 2012 to 2024 and right now we're starting to see the first really high-quality companies create large liquid pools of value."

Quick Commerce platform Zepto in its biggest funding round this year has raised $665 million, bringing its valuation to $3.6 billion. With this new investors including, Avenir, Lightspeed, and Avra (Anu Hariharan&rsquo;s new fund), have joined the company&rsquo;s cap table along with existing investors Glade Brook, Nexus, and StepStone with additional contributions from Goodwater and Lachy Groom.
<h3>Zepto Fundraising</h3>
This is Zepto's second significant fundraise in 10 months. In August 2023, Zepto achieved the unicorn status with valuation of $1.4 billion after securing $235 million. This funding round also comes as the startup is planning a for an initial public offering (IPO) in 12-15 months and aims to turn profitable before listing.
"We are in a pretty healthy place even with the cash we have in the bank. We look at this funding round more as a pre-IPO financing to build our balance sheet ahead of our upcoming IPO. Having this cash enables us to launch an IPO of meaningful scale," said Aadit Palicha, co-founder and chief executive officer of Zepto.
<h3>Zepto's Performance</h3>
Zepto's gross merchandise value has multiplied year-on-year to over $1 billion, and around 75 per cent of the company&rsquo;s stores are fully ebitda positive as of May 2024.&nbsp;
&ldquo;This dynamic of stores turning profitable faster has enabled Zepto to grow rapidly while achieving near ebitda positivity at a company level. We plan to continue operating with fiscal discipline as we scale from 350 stores to 700 stores by reinvesting the capital generated from mature stores back into the business,&rdquo; said Palicha, referring to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation.
Currently, Zepto runs 350 dark storesin top 10 cities and plans to expand into another ten. Dark stores are a retail distribution centre or outlet that serves exclusively to online shopping.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The most exciting part about this next phase of Zepto&rsquo;s journey is the major new projects that will 10X customer experience, from launching new categories to expanding initiatives like Zepto Pass. To build out this roadmap, we plan to hire top talent across engineering, product, growth, finance, operations, and category management,&rdquo; said Kaivalya Vohra, co-founder and chief technology officer of Zepto.

Grocery delivery startup Zepto is planning to raise $650 million at a valuation of $3.5 billion from existing and new investors, reported Moneycontrol. As per the report, the existing investors include StepStone Group, Nexus Venture Partners and Glade Brook Capital, while the new investors would be Avenir Growth, Lightspeed Venture Partners, DST Global and Avra.
This fundraise comes even as many startups are suffering from funding winter that hit the Indian startup ecosystem in late 2022
<h3>Zepto's fundraising plans</h3>
As per Moneycontrol, this fresh fund raising round will &nbsp;more than double Zepto's valuation from $1.4 billion to $3.5 billion as investors remain bullish on the company growth potential in the quick commerce segment. The report further mentioned that Nexus and its LP (limited partner) StepStone will together lead the round by putting in a majority of the total $650 million
This fundraising will be the second round for Zepto within a year's time. In August 2023, the startup raised $231 million, from StepStone Group, Goodwater Capital and other investors at a valuation of $1.4 billion.
<h3>Quick commerce companies in India</h3>
This investment by Nexus will be the largest investment ever. The big bet on Zepto comes as it is the only pure play quick commerce company among the lot which is in the need to set itself apart from the rest. To achieve this, Zomato requires faster growth with a deep pool of capital.
Zepto's rivals are large players including Zomato-owned Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart and Tata&rsquo;s BigBasket. All of this are working to become the top player in the space. Gurugram-based Blinkit is currently the largest quick commerce company with a market share of about 40-45%, as per several estimates. Meanwhile Zomato and Swiggy have a thriving food delivery business, BigBasket is owned by the Tata group.
The Moneycontrol report quoting Goldman Sachs said that while quick commerce has struggled globally, it has emerged as a $5-billion annual sales channel in India and will only grow further. As per Goldman Sachs, Zepto does 5.5 lakh orders a day through a network of 340 dark stores across seven cities in India while its annualised Gross Order Value stands at $1.2 billion and has a take rate of 23%.
Meanwhile, Blinkit delivered over 7 lakh orders each day and had 526 dark stores during the January-March period. Blinkit had a take rate of around 19%.
Take rate is what the company earns from brands on each sale.

Quick commerce firm, Zepto on Thursday launched the paid subscription service&mdash;Zepto Pass which will bring competition in India&rsquo;s growing quick commerce market.
&ldquo;The company has piloted Zepto Pass with 5% of its user base for a month and seen rapid adoption&mdash;almost a majority of orders came from Zepto Pass subscribers within two weeks during the pilot," it said in a statement.&nbsp; Zepto in a statement said that subscribers to Zepto Pass have increased their app spending by over 30% and demonstrated a 10% rise in monthly retention rates. Priced between 19 and 39 rupees per month for most customers, the subscription includes perks such as unlimited free deliveries and up to 20% off on grocery items. Zepto's initiative aligns with the efforts of quick commerce companies to meet consumer demands, expand their market presence, and broaden their product offerings. Quick-commerce company Zepto has reported a significant widening of losses, totaling Rs 1,272 crore in FY 2022-23, compared to Rs 390.3 crore in the previous fiscal year.
However, the company's revenues from operations increased 14-fold to reach Rs 2,024 crore during the same period. Despite this, total expenses soared to Rs 3,350 crore, with a considerable portion spent on stock-in-trade and employee benefits.

Interestingly, Zepto managed to improve its profit after tax (PAT) margin from 277% in FY22 to 63% in FY23 and remains on track to achieve EBITDA breakeven in the near future. The company's growth, including profitable dark stores, has been remarkable, leading to its unicorn status with a valuation of $1.4 billion after raising $200 million in a recent funding round led by the StepStone Group.

LinkedIn unveiled its 'Top 25 Indian Startups List,' an annual compilation of emerging companies that professionals aspire to work for. The ranking is based on data from nearly 10 million LinkedIn members.
Zepto's ascent to the top spot marks a significant achievement, moving up three positions from last year. It's attributed to the company's robust employee growth, high jobseeker interest, active member engagement within the organization, and its ability to attract talent from LinkedIn's prestigious Top Companies list.

Yash Acharya recently took to X, to share an interesting story of how an online grocery company's billionaire co-founder reached out to him directly for his CV.
Acharya had applied for the role of a product design intern to work at the online grocery delivery platform. However, he revealed that he received an e-mail with the subject line saying, "You&rsquo;d be a great fit for this Delivery Boy (Mumbai) role at Zepto!"

Zepto, an instant grocery delivery app, has announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for the family of its delivery agent who was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Delhi on Wednesday. 
The delivery app issued a statement on Twitter saying that Karan, the delivery agent, was wearing a helmet and riding on the right side of the road when he was hit from behind. The statement further added that Karan died in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on Wednesday. 
Zepto said that the police has filed an FIR in the case and the app is working closely with authorities. 
In addition to a compensation of ₹10 lakh, the company is also provinding an additional granted of ₹8 lakh, Zepto said in its statement.
