The Supreme Court was on Friday informed that the execution of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who is on death row for murder in Yemen, has been stayed.
Attorney General R Venkataramani, appearing for the Centre, told a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that "efforts are on" in the matter.
The top law officer said the government wants Priya to come back safely.
"They (government) are taking good care of whatever is possible," the bench observed.
The counsel appearing for the petitioner said they have to first get pardon and then the issue of "blood money" would come.
The petitioner informed the court that the execution has been postponed.
The bench posted the matter for further hearing on August 14.
The apex court was hearing a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to use diplomatic channels to save Priya, 38, facing execution in Yemen.
The execution was earlier scheduled for July 16.
Priya, a nurse from Palakkad district of Kerala, was convicted of murdering her Yemeni business partner in 2017. She was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023.
She is currently imprisoned in a jail in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen.&nbsp;

The execution of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse on death row in Yemen, has been postponed by Yemeni authorities, government sources said on Tuesday.
The execution was scheduled for Wednesday.
Priya, hailing from Kollengode in Kerala's Palakkad district, has been found guilty of murdering a Yemeni citizen in July 2017.
It has been learnt that the local authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution scheduled for July 16, the sources said.
The government of India has made concerted efforts in recent days to seek more time for Priya's family to reach a "mutually agreeable" solution with the other party, they said.
In 2020, a Yemeni court handed her the death sentence and the country's Supreme Judicial Council dismissed her appeal in November 2023.
The 38-year-old nurse is presently lodged in a jail in Sana'a, the Yemeni capital city that is under the control of Iran-backed Houthis.
The sources said the government of India has been rendering all possible assistance in the case since beginning.
Despite the sensitivities involved, Indian officials have been in regular touch with the local jail authorities and the prosecutor's office, leading to securing the postponement, the sources said.
Priya's mother Premakumari travelled to Yemen last year as part of efforts to secure her release.
The Indian side had even explored the option of securing Priya's release through "diyat" or paying "blood money". But that also ran into some problems, it is learnt.
The government on Monday informed the Supreme Court that it was doing whatever was "utmost possible" to save the Indian nurse from execution.
It also informed the top court that "nothing much" could be done keeping in view the status of Yemen.

The Centre on Monday informed the Supreme Court that the government could do "nothing much" in the case of an Indian nurse facing execution on July 16 for murder in Yemen.
Attorney general R Venkataramani informed a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that the government was doing "utmost possible".
"Having regard to the sensitivity and status of Yemen as a place, there is nothing much the Government of India can do," he said.
He continued, "There is a point up to which the Government of India can go and we have reached that point." Venkataramani said the government recently wrote to the public prosecutor of the area concerned to find out if the execution could be suspended for the time being.
"The Government of India is trying its best," Venkataramani said, "and has also engaged with some sheikhs who are very influential people there." He said the government was keen to save one of its citizens.

On Monday, the counsel appearing for petitioner organisation 'Save Nimisha Priya &ndash; International Action Council' which extends legal support to assist Priya, said it was a "very unfortunate situation".
"Up to the Supreme Judicial Council of Yemen, the death penalty has been confirmed," he said referring to the country's Sharia law.
He said mother of Priya was there in Yemen along with a social worker to negotiate with the family of the deceased for blood money.
"The only thing that is possible today to avoid death sentence is the family of the deceased agreeing to accept blood money," the counsel said, pointing out they were not asking for funds from the government and would themselves arrange the money.
Venkataramani referred to the Houthis in Yemen and said it was not even diplomatically recognised.
"Blood money is a private negotiation," he said.
The bench said, "They (petitioner) are saying they may be able to arrange for the blood money. The only question is the negotiating link." Venkataramani said Yemen was not like any other part of the world where the government, through a diplomatic process or an inter-governmental negotiation, can sought something.
"It is very complex," he said, "and we don't want to complicate the situation by going too much public".
Venkataramani added, "And probably we got some kind of an informal communication saying probably the execution is kept under abeyance. We don't know how far to believe that." He said there was no way the government could get to know what was really happening in Yemen.
"The real cause of concern is the manner in which the incident took place and in spite thereof, if she looses her life, that is really sad," the bench remarked.
The top law officer said, "It is not a matter where the government can be asked to do something beyond the defined limit. It is not possible." The bench posted the matter on July 18 and asked the parties to apprise the court about the status.
On July 10, the top court agreed to hear the plea after the petitioner's counsel said diplomatic channels were needed to be explored at the earliest.
The counsel said payment of blood money to the family of the deceased permissible under Sharia law could be explored.
He said the family of the victim might pardon Priya if blood money was paid.
The plea cited a media report stating the tentative date of the execution was set on July 16 by the Yemeni administration.
"In 2015, Nimisha Priya joined hands with Talal Abdo Mahdi (Yemen national) to set up her own clinic in Yemen's capital city Sana'a. She sought Mahdi's support because, under Yemen law, only nationals are allowed to set up clinics and business firms," the plea said.
It said in 2015 Mahdi accompanied Priya to Kerala when she came on a month-long holiday.
Priya was sentenced to death by a Yemani trial court and in fact, she is a "victim of war" as she did not get a proper legal defense during those days of serious civil war in Yemen, it added.
According to Yemeni court documents, Priya in July 2017 allegedly drugged and murdered Mahdi and, with the help of another nurse, chopped his body and disposed of the dismembered parts in an underground tank.

Background of the Case
Nimisha Priya, a trained nurse from Palakkad, was found guilty of killing Talal Abdo Mahdi, a Yemeni national, in 2017. A Yemeni court sentenced her to death a year later, and her family has been tirelessly working to have the verdict overturned. Priya&rsquo;s family challenged the trial court&rsquo;s decision in the Yemeni Supreme Court, but their appeal was rejected in 2023. Following this, the Yemeni President also dismissed her appeal. Priya&rsquo;s only hope for release lies in obtaining forgiveness from the victim&rsquo;s family and tribal leaders.
Her mother, Prema Kumari, has been negotiating with the victim&rsquo;s family for forgiveness through the payment of "blood money." However, talks hit an impasse in September after the lawyer appointed by the Indian Embassy, Abdullah Ameer, demanded a pre-negotiation fee of $20,000 (approximately Rs 16.6 lakh). Although the MEA had already provided $19,871 to Ameer in July, he insisted on a total fee of $40,000. Despite the crowdfunding efforts by the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council to raise the first installment of this amount, there were transparency concerns over how the funds were being used.
 The Circumstances Leading to the Death Sentence
Nimisha Priya moved to Yemen in 2010 and worked as a nurse in private hospitals. In 2014, due to financial constraints, her husband and daughter returned to India. That same year, Yemen plunged into a civil war, preventing their return. In 2015, Priya sought the help of Talal Mahdi to set up a clinic in Sana'a, Yemen, as the country's laws allowed only Yemeni nationals to own clinics. During this time, Mahdi accompanied Priya to Kerala, where he allegedly stole her wedding photograph and later manipulated it to falsely claim he was married to her.
Upon their return to Yemen, Priya opened her clinic, but Mahdi took control of its revenue and manipulated ownership documents. When Priya confronted him about his embezzlement, Mahdi became hostile. He also falsely claimed Priya as his wife, even altering photographs to support this claim. Over time, Mahdi began to demand money from Priya's earnings and seized her passport, subjecting her to physical and emotional abuse.
Despite Priya seeking help from the police in Sana&rsquo;a, her situation worsened. Rather than taking action against Mahdi, the police arrested Priya and held her in jail for six days. In July 2017, Priya approached the warden of a nearby jail where Mahdi had been incarcerated. The warden suggested she try sedating Mahdi to retrieve her passport. Priya attempted this, using a stronger sedative, but Mahdi died from an overdose shortly afterward.

The United States and Britain launched a second round of joint military strikes on Yemen's Houthis on Tuesday over their attacks on Red Sea shipping, as the Iran-backed rebels vowed to hit back.
The latest raids, heard by residents of the rebel-held capital Sanaa around midnight (2100 GMT), hit eight Houthi targets, a joint US-UK statement said, while the Houthis listed 18 strikes across their territory.
US and British forces carried out a first wave of strikes against the rebel group earlier this month, and the United States launched further air raids against missiles that Washington said posed imminent threats to both civilian and military vessels.
But the Houthis have vowed to continue their attacks -- just one part of a growing crisis in the Middle East linked to the Israel-Hamas war, which has raised fears of a broader war directly involving Iran.
The latest strikes were against "eight Houthi targets in Yemen in response to the Houthis' continued attacks against international and commercial shipping as well as naval vessels transiting the Red Sea", Washington and London said in a joint statement with other countries that supported the military action.
"These precision strikes are intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities that the Houthis use to threaten global trade and the lives of innocent mariners," the statement said.
The US Central Command said in a separate statement that the targets of the strikes "included missile systems and launchers, air defence systems, radars, and deeply buried weapons storage facilities".
- Attacks won't go 'unpunished' - &nbsp;British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said the Houthis had carried out more than 12 attacks on shipping since the first wave of joint strikes on January 11.
"What we have done again is send the clearest possible message that we will continue to degrade their ability to carry out these attacks... (and) that we back our words and our warnings with action," he said in a statement.
The Huthis remained defiant, with military spokesman Yahya Saree promising a response.
"These attacks will not go unanswered and unpunished," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter, listing 18 strikes in Sanaa, Hodeida, Taez and Al-Bayda provinces.
A senior US military official said the strikes were carried out using a combination of precision-guided munitions from US and British aircraft, and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
There were no concerns about civilian casualties at the sites that were hit, while Huthi losses were unknown, the official told journalists.
"The targeting was very specific and... very deliberate to go after the capability that they are using to attack maritime vessels in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab and Gulf of Aden," the official added.
Saree did not mention any casualties in his post on X.
Yemen's official Saba news agency said strikes hit Sanaa and several other parts of the country, while Houthi TV outlet Al-Masirah said four strikes targeted the Al-Dailami military base north of the capital, which is under rebel control.

Confirming the incident which happened in the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) informed that all crew members were safe. MSC stated that vessel assessments are underway and until safety is ensured vessels booked for Suez transit will be rerouted via Cape of Good Hope. These are the latest attacks in a series of drone and missile strikes by the group since the Israel-Hamas conflict began on October 7.

Yemen, the poorest country among Arab nations, is once again in the spotlight after drone strikes in Emirates capital Abu Dhabi where followed by Saudi Arabia-led coalition carrying out strikes on the militant Houthi group.
Yemen's war began in September 2014, when the Houthis, who are Shias, seized Sanaa and began a march south to try to seize the entire country. The Navy's Mideast-based 5th Fleet described the laser as having "successfully engaged" the target in a statement.
Previously, the Portland used the laser to bring down a flying drone in May 2020.

These boats are suspected of being built with Iran's help.

The water-borne disease is now spreading to other African countries that face water shortages. A deadly disease that originated in India, cholera spread around the world in the early 1800s, but was treated later.

The UN Security Council voted unanimously on Friday authorising the deployment of a UN team to monitor a ceasefire in Yemen's key port of Hodeida and the withdrawal of rival forces from the area. The ceasefire, if implemented, could be a potential breakthrough in the four-year civil war that has driven Yemen to the brink of starvation and created the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
